Heartwarming / Touken Ranbu - Hanamaru

Go To

As a collection of stories about the laid back hanamaru days of this Citadel, you can bet there will be moments to make you feel hanamaru too.

  • Episode 4, with the reunion of four of the five Shinsengumi swords (and Okita swords' talk that becomes Heartwarming in hindsight only after the final episode of Zoku). Especially for Horikawa, who, according to Kashuu, had been waiting for his partner since his own arrival. Then it's followed up by a funny scene, because that's just how Hanamaru rolls.
  • Episode 7, when Ichigo Hitofuri finally arrives at the citadel after his brothers have spent months waiting for him. Their reunion is nothing short of heartwarming.
    • Ichigo and Yagen's talk from the same episode. After seeing Yagen spend nights and nights trying to summon his elder brother for the sake of the rest of the Awataguchi school swords, seeing Ichigo apologize for his absence and absolve him of his duty was cathartic. And the best part— even after Ichigo comes to the Citadel, the other boys still view Yagen as an elder brother too. There is a reason this scene was one of the most memorable of the first season.
  • In episode 9, Yamatonokami tells Iwatooshi and Imanotsurugi about his dreams regarding the Ikedaya inn. Imanotsurugi then admits that he also has similar dreams about how he couldn't save Yoshitsune and becomes visibly sad. Iwatooshi then says that it's all in the past and cheers the boy up by saying that now that he's here, he won't let Imanotsurugi feel lonely ever again.
  • In Episode 12, before Nagasone sets out on the mission with Shinsengumi swords and Mutsunokami. Even though Hachisuka refuse to knowledge Nagasone as his brother and calls him a fake, he still cares for him as he tells him if he dies, he won't forgive him.
  • Yamatonokami and Okita Souji talking face-to-face for the first, and most likely the last time together. Although the latter doesn't recognize Yamatonokami now that he is a sword spirit, the conversation they have gives him some much needed closure. Crosses into Tear Jerker as well.
  • In the final episode, all 47 Touken Danshi have a group photo together after Yamatonokami returns from his training journey. It shows how all of them have grown closer together as the year passes.
  • Zoku episode 3 for all the Dategumi interactions. Okurikara actually smiles during the episode, and Taikogane and Shokudaikiri's almost familial relationship gets explored.
  • In Episode 4 of Zoku, even though Hasabe dislikes Fudou for talking about their former master, he is willing to save him when he nearly drown into the ocean during a rainstorm.
  • In the B story of episode 4 of Zoku, when Yamanbagiri experiences stage fright during the talent show and Kogarasumaru notices him being self-deprecating, he gets up and dances, inviting Yamanbagiri to join him. It's very reminiscent of when fathers join their children during dance recitals to help them with their stage fright. With how Kogarasumaru sees himself as the father of all of the swords there, it's very fitting.
  • The first segment of Episode 6 of Zoku is one big moment of this for the Samonji brothers. After Sayo starts having nightmares and crying out for vengeance in his sleep, his brothers are obviously concerned for his well-being. Upon hearing that Hasebe and Yagen are planting lavender seeds, Souza asks if he can borrow some so Sayo can sleep at night as the herb has a calming effect on the mind. The talk about planting lavender makes Kasen recall a conversation he had with Sayo about flowers (set shortly after Kousetsu arrived back in Season 1) and he then suggests that they should plant a flower bed together to help set the boy's mind at ease. Over the course of the segment, other Touken Danshi try to help out in anyway they can by either providing Souza with fertilizer note , performing a blessing for the flowers note  or helping the remaining Samoji brothers protect the flowers from a storm when Sayo is away on an expedition. note
  • Upon seeing the completed flower bed, Sayo notes how pretty it is. Kousetsu then asks him if his heart is still set on vengeance. Before answering Sayo acknowledges how much his brother dislikes violence but Kousetsu says that he isn't there to judge his little brother and has no intention of rejecting who he is. Sayo then answers that revenge will always be somewhere in his heart but when they were working on the flower bed, all he could think were the flowers and that he's happy that all three of them could plant them together. The segment then ends with Sayo sleeping in his room with a smile on his face.
