• When Justin first arrives at the fort, Flavius immediately befriends him and introduces him to his fellow soldiers. As anyone who's been new anywhere can tell you, it means a lot for someone to take the time to make you feel included.
• Carausius has a country to run and an assassination to avoid, but he still makes time to write a note to Flavius and Justin so they'll know that he did believe them and did what he did to protect them.
• On a similar note, Carausius takes thought for what will happen to Cullen after he's gone and wills him to the protection of Justin and Flavius, who he trusts to take care of Cullen.
• Justin treats not only the soldiers who are his direct responsibility but also the locals. One of the hunters he treats ends up befriending him and Flavius and carrying a dangerous message for them and later joins their resistance movement.
• At the end Justin's father, who has always been disappointed in Justin's career choice and whom Justin was worried would think he's a deserter, writes to him and assures Justin that he has faith in him and is proud of the man he's become, even if he's not good at expressing it.
• Anthonius defends an old woman from Allectus' jerk bodyguards. When Allectus scolds him for it, Anthonius deserts to Paulinus' resistance.
• When Flavius and Justin are offered reinstatement into the Roman army, they request that Anthonius and some other members of their resistance who were Roman soldiers also be taken back.
