Heartwarming / The Grand Vizier of Oz

Go To

  • How the flying monkeys treat Nessa when she visits is very sweet.
  • Despite Oscar's reticence at changing his habits (speaking to visitors through the giant head, not going out in public as his "human form", downplaying Animal rights), he does so to prove how much he loves Elphaba and wants her to love him back.
    • Speaking of, even though they just met that day, Oscar starts crying tears of joy when he learns Elphaba is his daughter.
    • What's more, he genuinely comes around to her way of thinking and regrets how he acted before.
  • When Elphaba denies that the Wizard is her father and storms out of the palace after refusing his generous offers, Glinda sticks around to tell him that she's a good girl and she'll come around.
    • From then on Glinda does everything she can to mend Elphaba and Oscar's relationship - and she succeeds.
  • The flashback of Melena playing with young Elphaba. It's the only time we see Elphaba and her family truly happy.
    • Even though Melena hates the milkflowers Frex makes her eat, she does so anyway to alleviate Frex's worry about the new baby being born green (even though they will eventually kill her and cripple Nessa), and because she doesn't want to break his heart by telling him the truth about Elphaba's parentage.
  • When Frex gave many of Melena's heirlooms that were supposed to go to Elphaba to Nessa instead, one of the servants risked her job to secretly take a few back for her. She finally gets the chance to give Elphaba a way to remember her mother years later.
  • The entirety of "Cause For Celebration":
    • When Oscar can't think of how to reach out to Elphaba for her birthday, he asks Glinda for help, showing how much he trusts her judgement and considers her a daughter just as much as he does Elphaba.
    • Elphaba's sheer surprise and joy at a birthday party thrown just for her.
    • Oscar's reaction to an unexpected thank you note from Elphaba for his present.
  • "Graduation" is this for all the characters, but the top crowning moment comes when Elphaba gets her diploma: Oscar gives her a standing ovation and gets everyone assembled to do the same for her.
  • Oz taking to Elphaba's Animal reforms. Though it's an uphill battle, Oz becomes a much better place for Animals thanks to her.
    • A segment of "Letters" has a Dalmatian mother writing to Elphaba asking for her help in a case where her son had his tail broken by a prejudiced constable. The next part reveals Elphaba dropped everything to personally investigate the matter, flew to the Dalmatians' home at one in the morning to heal him, and dealt with the constable herself.
  • Oscar is so desperate to make Elphaba happy he experiments on himself to see if he can reverse her skin color. Though it winds up nearly killing him, it's the thought that counts.
    • By this point Elphaba has forgiven Oscar for his mistakes and is genuinely horrified that he would do such a thing to himself. While he recovers, he shares stories about his family and life in Kansas with her. Elphaba is happy to learn she has a whole other side of her family that she takes after.
  • Fiyero does all he can to help the Cowardly Lion when he learns he's the same lion cub he and Elphaba freed while at Shiz, even after he attacked him on the yellow brick road.
  • The ice cream incident. Seeing Glinda and Elphaba kid around like they were still in school will put a smile on your face.
  • Though it's short-lived, the welcoming party Frex throws for Elphaba and everyone's joy Nessa using her legs for the first time is heartwarming.
    • Throughout the story we see Glinda and Elphaba working together to find a way to allow Nessa to walk with magic. Though they live far away and Nessa hasn't forgiven her yet for letting Boq go, Elphaba still hasn't forgotten her sister.
  • Nessa giving her blessing to Fiyero and Elphaba's marriage, showing how far the two have come.
  • At long last, Elphaba accepts Oscar as her true father and asks if he can walk her down the aisle at her wedding.
  • In the very last moments of the final chapter, Elphaba recalls her unclear vision of Oz celebrating something to do with her during "The Wizard and I". She realizes that very moment is finally happening as Oz celebrates her engagement to Fiyero and all she has done for them since becoming Grand Vizier.
