  • Rose's attempt at leaving the turkey in the oven overnight at a ridiculously low temperature (which Macon believes will breed disease-causing germs) is a disaster, with the bird looking gray and unappetizing. Julian (who has a growing relationship with her) steadfastly states: "I'll have the turkey." Later, Rose tells Macon firmly, "He had two big helpings of my turkey. And he did not get sick."
  • In the book, Julian learns to play Vaccination, while Rose enjoys boating with him in return.
  • Macon sees Alexander being harassed by his classmates. Edward starts champing at the bit, and Macon unleashes him. Edward makes a beeline for Alexander, who embraces him, making both of them feel better.
  • The scene appears in the film, but the book delves deeper into the emotions: when Macon takes Alexander to shop for clothes, he meets the parent of one of Ethan's friends, and she says clothes shopping for boys is such a pain, then realizing the gaffe. At that moment, Alexander pops out of the dressing room, with oversized jeans and a t-shirt and floppy blond hair (since Macon took over cutting his hair and letting it grow), exclaiming "I look wonderful!" Macon can only smile and tell the mom he finds it pleasurable.
