- It's hard not to tear up at the reaction of the group when they discover that Twigleg was Nettlebrand's spy. Especially Ben defending him from Sorrel.
- Sorrel may be a mushroom-munching grump, but no matter what, her love for her dragon, Firedrake, shines clear. She makes it certain to Firedrake that he will not be traveling anywhere without her early in the book. Later, the two are separated in a world they do not understand, but as soon as they reunite, Sorrel starts jumping with glee (almost knocking over the boat she was in). And the minute her feet hit the ground, she ran up to Firedrake and began nuzzling him and nipping his nose.
