* Jimmy [=McNulty=] is a pretty successful womanizer. But I don't understand how. He's pretty average in looks, his flirting is obvious and sleazy, he's a slobby dresser, I can't imagine he smells all that good either. In Season 2 he walks into a diner so drunk he can barely walk and ogles the waitress, and she's just instantly seduced by that somehow. How is this guy a Casanova?
** Whether Dominic West (then or now) is "average" in looks is subjective, but Dominic West (especially when this was shot) probably looked good to a lot of people. Assuming he looked good in the world of The Wire, good-looking guys could get away with a LOT of out-of-pocket "flirting" at the time of 2008 and even now (some would argue). Heck, even if he was straight ugly, there are/were casanovas that weren't good looking yet could somehow get ladies. Regarding the diner: if you're talking the season 2 waitress, that's one woman. There's nothing to suggest he can easily just do that everywhere.

* The head FBI guy declines to go at Clay Davis after the State trial fails, angry that they held back the "Headshot" evidence and unwilling to prosecute after the State trial "turned Clay into Martin Luther King". But why does that even matter? Could there be any actual blowback from prosecuting Clay federally, other than public outcry? Or is this just pettiness like the same man displayed when they wouldn't take Clay federal in the first place?

*** Of course, Marlo's answer to Stringer's first attempt at diplomacy was to inmediately this tool-up, and there is indeed no chance of Marlo letting him loose to be up to some mischief, but Stringer was self-delusional enough to think otherwise, beliving he could be a wholesaler while avoiding turf's wars. Avon's "a man without a country" rebuke sums it all pretty well.

** A big part of this can be boiled down to impulsiveness and pressure from the Co-Op. If the war didn't end, Stringer was going to lose the New York package. Also, there was further strain between him and Avon than ever at that point, with Avon slapping down his plan to hit Clay Davis, being unwilling to barter with Marlo, and everything before that. He probably DID think in his head at that time that if Avon goes away, all the trouble goes away (for now) and he can hire new muscle if needed.

** The complaints were most likely a product his CowboyCop antics, flouting rules and regulations, cutting corners regarding procedure and so on, all aggravated by his youth. His prequel segment relates he landed in homicide after solving a case wrongly closed by Cole, stepping over other people's toes and coloring outside the line is certainly nothing new.

*** Stringer is leading a "criminal fucking conspiracy" that can (and eventually will) fall apart like a house of cards, "neutral" is not good enough. D'Angelo can say one thing today, but that's not written in stone and he has a history of being unreliable, permeable with the police, which combined with the outburst, affront and beef he had over Wallace is not something that Stringer can realistically let go.

** Creator/DominicWest epitomizes the TallDarkAndHandsome archetype (he made Prince Charles look good-looking), and by the way he carries himself around, Jimmy can be easily identified as a police detective, which conveys both mystery and danger, very appealling traits, specially in a crime-ridden city like Baltimore. And when he's sober, he can be witty and is a good talker with a phrase for everything, even if his logic is faulty. It's not hard to imagine him having some good, tried and tested pick-up lines even when he's at his worst in a semi-comatose state.
