Misuse, Headscratchers is for Fridge Logic about the work, not about the reception

[[WMG: Why did this movie do so badly? What are the major complaints against it?]]
I realize that people have different tastes, and there have been plenty of movies, books, shows, etc. I like that many others don't and vice versa, but I have never been so confused by the difference between the majority reaction to a fictional product and my own as I am by this movie. I love absolutely everything about it and always have. I think the plot is solid and perfectly paced, almost perfectly written except for the padding of the tag scene. The music is awesome, the performances are pitch-perfect, the fight scenes are exciting, the character development with the girls learn and grow is perfect, all the emotional moments hit their mark... While it has its flaws like the tag scene and the 2nd day at kindergarten, and it's not my favorite film of all time or anything, the good seems to outweigh the bad so vastly that I'm honestly mystified why it's not (and never was) widely beloved. What unforgivable sins did this film commit? What are viewers biggest issues with it? Why it wasn't a financial hit is irrelevant (excellent films doing poorly at the box office is far too common to be worth mentioning). Why did it fail at earning the love and excitement of PPG fans? Was it ''really'' just because it's "too violent"? Are "girls' stories" (meaning, stories about girls, apparently, not "stories intended only for girls," which neither the film nor cartoon ever was) ''really'' still '''not''' supposed to be too violent in this progressive, enlightened day and age? I'm helplessly baffled -- why wasn't this film seen as excellent or at least great from the day it premiered? What problems does everyone have with it? Was it the violence or other stuff?
* The only thing I can think if is most people didn't expect it to be an OriginStory.
** The movie has a surprisingly dark tone that can be very off-putting. We expect the people of Townsville to be stupid but to see them treat the girls cruelly is pretty jarring when you're used to seeing them be so loving.

[[WMG: Drawing contest]]
I heard that there was a contest held for the PPG movie as it was being made; it was a drawing contest where the winners would have their drawings put in the final film. Does anyone remember who the winners were, and what became of the other entries?
