• Why didn't the Wishnows take their mezuzah with them when they moved?
  • Following the custom to leave the mezuzah if another Jewish family moves in, it may have been a hope against hope. Or, considering everything happening to them, they may have wanted to leave it behind ("See what being Jewish has done for/to us!")—or they may just have forgotten it.
  • Silent protest. They consider that house their home and that they aren't leaving on their own volition. So they leave the mezuzah behind to indicate that the house is still theirs as far as they are concerned.
