Headscratchers / Star Trek: The Next Generation S7E6 "Dark Page"

  • Lwaxana deleted seven years of her personal journal because she had a daughter before Troi who drowned in an accident. But how could her journal be the only record of this? What about Starfleet biographical records? Wouldn't she have childhood friends or family members who knew about it?
    • Betazoids are telepathic. Knowing that Lwaxana finds the topic distressing to think about, they probably go out of their way not to bring it up.
      • Betazoids being telepathic would only make it harder to keep it from Lwaxana. Humans can simply not bring up a subject. Lwaxana will know when people are thinking about her grief and trying to avoid a subject.
      • Except that her valet knew about it, and even kept a hidden stash of mementos in case Lwaxana ever wanted them.
    • The journal may not be the only record, perhaps Ian's Starfleet bio does include Kestra. Deanna had absolutely no idea what she was looking for so no idea where to start. But also, maybe the bio was scrubbed. We have no idea what kind of privacy laws they may have, and it could and probably does vary by Federation planet. Granted, it certainly never seems that way, but it's certainly possible. Also, Lwaxana is at least some sort of ambassador and may have pulled strings.
  • How did Lwaxana, a very capable telepath, not notice that something had happened to her daughter, who was playing nearby when whatever happened, happened? Was she distracted by crying baby Deanna and the barking dog? Is her severe trauma over the tragedy based on a sense of guilt that she, a mother who can literally read minds, did not sense what happened?
