They obviously know that when the saucer finally halts, they will be thrown forward. Yet most of them, most noticeably Riker, just sit there looking worried. Then of course, he goes flying forward.

** Given the mass and momentum of the saucer section, which, y'know, was slamming into a planet from a position out of direct orbit, how much good would simply bracing have helped when EVERYTHING around them started flying? At one point the OPS and CONN positions violently and physically LURCH out of their secured place forward toward the viewscreen. It's entirely possible that the crew getting thrown around WAS with the inertial dampeners still online - we've seen how badly ships shake during combat, after all.

** You can still see it in the film itself if you look closely. Picard looks at the probe as it launches with baited breath, and doesn't look defeated until it hits, as if he was waiting to see if Enterprise would shoot it down, and when Nexus and Shockwave approaches Picard looks around confused, as if he's wondering why Enterprise isn't beaming him back to warp out of the area. And he later asks Guinian why she isn't on the Enterprise safe and sound when she'd actually been blown up with it at that point. This still doesn't explain why he doesn't go back to when he met Soran and arrest him immediately though.

* So, the reason Soran wants to experience the Nexus again is because his refugee ship was briefly exposed to the raw power of the Nexus, and he and the other refugees got to experience, for a moment, being inside...before he was beamed aboard the ''Enterprise-B''. So logically, if it is possible to transport someone OUT of the event horizon of this cosmic anomaly, why not just hire or commandeer a ship with a powerful enough transporter, put on an EVA suit, and beam INTO the event horizon of the Nexus so you get sucked in?

Hire or commandeer a ship with a powerful enough transporter, put on an EVA suit, and beam himself INTO the event horizon of the Nexus so you he can get sucked in?

*** This most likely. The crew and families were put on the three ships we see flying away at the end most likely with the clothes on their backs. After the ship is salvaged they can all come back to a star base and recover personal items.

*** I really do not think that the holodeck safety protocols apply to preventing blunt force trauma or even accidents in general. Chief O'Brien gets injured so often that it's a running joke. It is definitely possible to get beaten up by holograms. And both Riker and Data were clearly scared for Wesley when he fell into the river in ''Encounter At Farpoint.'' It is also worth noting at this point that the holodeck safety protocols have a very dubious track record of actually ensuring anyone's safety so it would certainly be unwise to test them by pushing a middle-aged woman off a ship without warning even if they did work as you describe.

*** If you hit your head on the side of a holodeck ship, wouldn't it suddenly become only as hard as, say, a boxing mat?

** Let's look at how these two fall into the water. Worf suffers a gentle drop straight down like a stone. It was unpleasant for him, but there is minimal risk that any healthy adult who can swim would be injured by that fall and he does have time to acknowledge that the plank is vanishing beneath him and thus ready himself. Crusher on the other hand was pushed ''unexpectedly backwards at force'' over the edge of a very high ship. Go and watch a clip of how she falls: she almost does a complete backflip. She could easily have cracked her skull open on the side of the ship doing that. And what's worse is that she connects with Worf who was climbing back up. And this time he very much is in danger because having a fully-grown woman land on your neck or back is potentially a paralysing action (and this is a man who, let's remember, once broke his back). These two scenarios are not remotely the same. One is an unintentional accident during the hazing of your tough-as-nails security chief, the other is nearly grievously injuring two people due to stupidity. You would have a case to bring Data up on an assault charge for this.

*** On top of that, the holodeck is massively power-hungry. Given that space isn't at a premium on a ''Galaxy''-class starship, it's probably more efficient to have a dedicated facility that draws less power when it's being used (and can probably be shut off entirely when it isn't), isn't in demand for other functions, and isn't the first thing to get shut down in a power emergency (like we saw in "Booby Trap").
