Headscratchers / Potion Seller

• If the potion seller's potions are too strong for anyone to handle—whether they be man, beast, or dragon—how can he stay in business? Who could possibly buy his potions if he just insults his customers until they leave?
  • A potion seller who sells weaker potions, probably. If the strongest potion is strong enough to kill a dragon, they could just dilute it in a barrel of water to produce weaker potions that a person could actually handle.
    • If that were the case, why wouldn't he offer to sell a diluted version to the knight instead of making him go to another potion seller?
    • The knight probably insulted him by ignoring his expertise and repeatedly demanding the strongest potion. It's also possible that he simply doesn't sell potions weak enough for a knight, and normally sells even his diluted potions to mythical magic beings or the like. He plainly has a strong reputation given how eager the knight is to buy his potions.
  • He only sells his potions to the strongest beings, and the knight is clearly not one of the strongest.
  • Maybe he is undeterred by the fact that he's never gotten a customer before who was strong enough to handle his potions, and keeps his store open in the hope that someday a customer will appear who's worthy of his potions. He might not need to sell any potions in the meantime because the losses from the potion store are offset by other sources of income, or he may not really even need money because he can meet all of his needs through alchemy and magic.
  • At the end he says that his potions can do anything a knight can. If this is true, it's possible that his potions aren't even meant to be consumed.
