** Researchers argue as to how valid the Flynn effect is. Several claim that it's simply a matter of comprehension and people are learning how to easily get high scores on outdated IQ tests that often challenges comprehension more than intellect. One particularly noteworthy support for this claim is that people like DaVinci (who are supposed to have genius intellects) would fail our modern IQ test because he never learned the method to take it properly. Others claim it is valid but the 20 point progression seems implausible and that it must be increasing at a slower rate.

* This may be something that's left to be revealed in the manga, whenever the next volume comes out, but what's up with Shinji's breathing issues in volume 10? Is Kowaru covered in allergens? Did he catch the same bug Asuka had in volume 9 that caused her to faint? Did he suddenly acquire asthma for no reason? I mean, it seems to disappear in vol. 11 when they made such a big deal of it, like it was going to foreshadow something important!

*** Coastal countries they may be, but second Impact struck Antarctica; meaning Japan would have been subject to far, far worse damage than European/Northern Hemisphere countries, and they're OK (relatively I mean). It's a safe assumption that they would be no worse off than Japan, and probably slightly better.

* The Dead Sea Scrolls of Evangelion lore foretell the coming of the Angels and Third Impact. They are the documents which Seele, Yui, and Gendo structure their agendas around. According Evageek's translation of the Classified Information, the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in the Qumran Caves were actually an "instruction manual" on how to operate the Seeds of Life (Adam and Lilith) and their respective Spears, and that they were adapted by a "religious group" to "suit their own doctrines", and that these adaptations were the only parts of the Scrolls released to the public as extracanonical religious material, while the rest was kept secret by Seele. Okay, fine. But how in the world did this religious group (presumably the ancient Israelites?) get access to this manual in the first place? Did the Moons carrying the Seeds somehow beam the info into the Israelites' heads? Did the First Impact of Lilith's Moon colliding with Adam's displace the instructions in either one of them to the Middle-East where it could be discovered many millions of years later? Point A isn't leading into Point B here...?

** They failed to stick the landing end ended up with their Evas crumpled in a heap, then immediately began fighting with each other over the phone, all of which made NERV look bad (remember earlier in the episode there is a scene where their superiors point out that when the pilots fuck up, it reflects badly on those in charge).

*** See, what bugs me, though, is that according to Wiki/TheOtherWiki, Adam was the First Angel and Lilith was the second, with the third being the first one battled in the series. If Lilith is expressly ''not'' an Angel, then how can humanity be number eighteen?

** Well, Kaworu stopped Third Impact in the Rebuild, so it's likely any Angel...and especially Kaworu, who is ALWAYS the Last Angel anyway, would of been able to stop Instrumentality if they started it. Or at least interfere so it doesn't go as planned.

*** Not to be snarky but its amazing how many Headscratchers come down to people not paying attention. As soon as Asuka started fighting the angel, she also started rising. Half her time down there was spent trying to rise out of the lava. It's very possible she was already very near the surface when Shinji saved her.

* Is there any particular reason why Shinji rarely leaves a shadow on other surfaces? In most of the scenes, Shinji seems to be missing the the purpose of dropping shadows. Most notable is the scene in episode 2 or 3 where Shinji takes out the trash, and doesn't throw a shadow on the ground. Is there some hidden meaning to this, or is it just the animators being lazy (though everyone else leaves shadows).

** Well, on the simplest level, an AT Field is probably a bit like a bulletproof vest - it can deflect quick impacts but can be "wrestled" apart by a struggling Eva, cut apart with a prog knife, or "drilled" through by the the Lance of Longinus. A strong enough impact can break through (like the proton beam) but it takes a lot more energy to do so. The Eva-wielded guns can do damage once the AT Field is negated, but I don't recall them ever being used to attack the Field itself.

** The ''existence'' of the 11th Angel wasn't in question. What Gendo was covering up was the exact form it took and the fact that it successfullly infilitrated NERV. The reason SEELE's files say "Attack Unconfirmed" is because at this point, they have not yet received any information beyond what their spies have unofficially told them in advance of their meeting with Gendo. We can assume that later, Gendo filed the "official" report offscreen, and that it probably was packed with lies about what the 11th Angel was and how they dealt with it. SEELE knew that he was almost certainly lying, but at this stage, there was no real benefit to pressing the issue, despite their threats.

*** Constant pressure. A nuke is like getting hit with a hammer, while a volcano is like getting hit with a small hammer, every second for however long you are in the volcano. An Eva just jumping in for a dip, no problem, but for extended operations at extreme depth, you can see why it would be needed.

* The Angels are classified by the order in which they appear. When Ireul, the 11th Angel, invades NERV, Gendo Ikari has all records of it erased, and tells SEELE that it never happened. SEELE threaten him with death if he's lying to them, but they have no proof. The problem comes with the following angels, who continue to be numbered following Ireul. For example, Bardiel (after possessing Unit-03) is officially classified as the 13th Angel. Shouldn't SEELE have been asking "What about the 11th?"?

** Everything was moving very fast. After they lose contact wth Kaworu and Shinji, the door to Terminal Dogma opens — we can guess that Kaworu's A.T. Field didn't hide the gate until he got close enough to it, which is why Misato could still be notified that it opened. At the moment the door opens, ''that's'' when Misato gives the final cue to Hyuga to blow it up — she says his name, he nods — but then, they get distracted by Rei's A.T. Field briefly disrupting Kaworu's. They lose contact for another few seconds (at which point the camera stops cutting back to the tech team), but then Kaworu quickly realizes that he's seeing Lilith. He obviously dropped his A.T. Field, then, because EVA-01 was later able to grab him, and dropping his A.T. means contact ''must'' have been re-established. We just didn't see it. Off-screen, Misato would have then seen that Shinji was about to crush him, making self-destuct unnecessary.

**** Trees are seen after Third Impact is over, so they definitely can return. It's likely that plants and animals would simply return by default, since living things usually have a basic instinct to prefer being alive. Only humans would really be tempted to lose their identities inside the LCL, so only humans would need to make an conscious decision to leave it.

** The fact that Shinji's expected to confront his problems ''despite'' the negative consequences ''is'' the point. In Anno's world, conflict is pain, relationships are pain, life itself comes with pain: that is the whole idea of the Hedgehog's Dilemma. This is true to life, because in real life, you can do everything perfectly and still end up being hurt by the outcome sometimes, or even most of the time. But it's better to do something about your problems and accept the risk of pain so that you also have the ''chance'' at real happiness, because if you always refuse to take action, then you ''definitely'' will never be happy.

** A simpler idea might be that most manga heroes, mech pilots in particular, are hot blooded and rather abrasive until they meet their kind hearted love interest who helps them become a better person by vowing to protect their delicate other half. Here, we see the protagonist as the delicate half, whose kindness and overall lack of some of the more negative hot-blooded hero traits are what attract the hot blooded girl, who isn't really hot blooded, but pretends to be as a shield to protect herself from being hurt.

** Shinji and Rei are literally the ''only people on Earth'' who share the experience of being an EVA pilot, and Rei is...well, Rei. So the only person who would have any sense at all of what she was going through (not counting her pre-show life) is Shinji. Unfortunately she's too stubborn and against showing any vulnerability that the two of them can't really connect on a deeper level before it's too late.

** The Third Impact and Instrumentality seemed inevitable at this point. Someone would trigger it. The variables here were who, why, and how, so Rei/Lillith takes matters into her own hands, eschewing the self serving versions of the event that Gendo and SEELE wanted to create in order to create a scenario where people could come back if they wished. It's also possible that in this case, life not necessarily a beating heart so much as it is autonomy, a soul, and the ability to make choices, which would fit with Rei's arc of finding herself and becoming her own person. The version of Instrumentality she initiates gives people choice, therefore giving them the right to life.

* Okay, love can make one stupid and crazy and all, but how did Gendo foresee Yui doing anything but violently rejecting him after he sleeps with both Dr.s Akagi, abandons their (meaning HER) son, and then does all sorts of things that make him miserable? If Yui resurrected she would reject Gendo in the most brutal lecture ever. And then Gendo would have nowhere to turn to.

*** I get that this is nowhere near hard sci-fi, but "trees can ''choose'' to come back"? Plants aren't sapient, and there's been no indication that they are in this series either. Plus there's no indication that Instrumentality preserved the souls of any non-human organisms, or at least merged them with all the human souls.

Its just censorship - they can't show a crotch with all the stuff it *should* have without the risk of a large fine.
