Headscratchers / London Has Fallen

Go To

When the President and Agent Banning have defeated the terrorists that attack them in the MI:6 safe house, they escape in an armoured 4 by 4 vehicle, and go to the US Embassy, ostensibly because there is a helicopter to evacuate the President, however they KNOW that the terrorists have the embassy staked out and will likely be attacked. Here's my question, since they have a (presumably) fully fueled armoured car (the make and model of which is unknown to the terrorists) and are armed themselves, and the streets of London are deserted and the terrorists cannot have the entire city under surveillance, why go to the embassy at all, since its the one place they know the villains will be? Instead, they could simply drive out of London altogether and make their way to any number of safe locations (the nearest UK military base, Heathrow, Gatwick or Stanstead airports) before the villains a) find out that they have a vehicle b)identify what the vehicle is c) organise a blockade or ambush? Possibly explainable in that, as US citizens, neither Banning nor the President would know their way around London, but an MI:6 car in 2016 probably has a Sat Nav, and, Banning being a former US Army Ranger, could probably navigate his way to the airport, right?

  • It's not a very smart movie, no. Banning's stated reasoning is that they don't have any other options, but really, just hiding in the garage until the real extraction team got there would've been perfectly effective.
  • Actually, I'm pretty sure his reasoning was 'place that just got attacked is a very bad place to be' and pretty much any civilians would be hiding in their houses, so the terrorists would probably shoot unfamiliar vehicles on sight, and the airport would likely have a few squads of terrorists on the perimeter. As for avoiding an ambush, it doesn't seem like they got very far before exactly that happened.
  • In the end, their options were 'stay where we are and make ourselves a target for future assaults', 'get out of here and try and get to safety somewhere they won't expect', or 'evacuate to a potentially safe location and hope we can stay away from the bad guys'; 1 wasn't an option for the reasons stated above, and 2 would endanger civilians if they couldn't find a way to communicate with the White House or anyone else to arrange an alternative evacuation, so 3 was the best of a bad lot.
