* So what's the whole point of his character? He's introduced as a driver who believes drifting is just theatrics that has no purpose in a proper race, which ''is'' true in real life of auto races that take place on paved surfaces, and prides himself on grip-style cornering. Yet he ends up being bested by Takumi anyway. So why introduce him then? Is he just a MetaGuy who's meant to be a mockery of those who think ArtisticLicenseCars is a bad thing? And suppose he is right in the ''Initial D'' universe -- why then doesn't Takumi switch to grip driving?

** The real answer is that Shinji's AE86 is far from stock itself. The engine is ported, has individual throttle bodies, a tuned computer, etc.

** Lots of people in real life drive cars they can only technically afford, either by taking on debt or making sacrifices elsewhere in their budget. It's not a stretch to say that a bunch of 20-something guys are making poor financial decisions, especially when they're never really shown to have a life outside of racing.
