  • Fridge Logic: Werewolves and humans can't interbreed. Werewolves tend to kill each other over mates. Why are there still werewolves? Interestingly enough, this is actually examined a bit in the novel. Vivian expresses more than a little frustration with the archaic and hypocritical aspects of their laws. Gabriel states outright that he feels that the loup garou have outlived their time and are merely waiting for the axe to fall.
    • Only the queen bitch is truly obliged to fight for a mate - to retain her claim to the pack leader. Rudy outright tells Esme that a female can mate with any other male without a fight, provided that he consents. The bitches' dance itself only deteriorates into a bloodbath because of Astrid, not because it's standard practice. It's also made clear that choosing a leader the Old Way (in a fight to the death) is a last resort when democracy fails, and is seen as an outdated tradition by many of the pack.
