Lord of Shadows
- The Shadowhunter family mottos:
- Julian tells Emma the Blackthorn family motto is "Lex Malla, Lex Nulla" (A bad law is no law), which is a dig at the motto of the Covenant: "Sed lex, dura lex" (The law is harsh, but it is the law). No wonder their family has a reputation for being rebellious.
- He then reveals that the motto of the Lightwood family (who are historically known for being haughty and snobbish) is "We mean well". Emma thinks it's joke at first. It is not.
- Emma and Julian then jokingly make up mottos for the other Shadowhunter families.
- For the Herondales they suggest "Chiseled but angsty" and "If you don't know what your last name is, it's probably Herondale".
- For her own family Emma suggests "We have a sword" and "Blunt instruments are for losers".
- For the Morgensterns they choose "When in doubt, start a war".
Queen of Air and Darkness
- When Kieran offers to do anything for Emma to make up for causing her to be lashed, she jokingly tells him that he can learn the hula dance. Kieran assumes that it's a Cool and Unusual Punishment and agrees to it.Sadly, Emma put aside the thought of Kieran in a grass skirt.
- Magnus being drunk after drinking the waters of Lake Lyn.
- He comments that his vision is mangled, so he can now see seven Alecs, his "ultimate fantasy". Dru immediately covers Tavvy's ears.
- He then points at the direction he thinks is a particularly attractive Alec, only to be pointed out that it's a vase. Later, he makes a speech and toasts to Kieran for saving warlocks. Jace points out that he is toasting to a doughnut.
