Funny / Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

  • The description of Abner Simpson's "trades", where he steals something from one neighbour, gives it to someone else in exchange for something, trades what he got from them to someone else, and so on. The narrator notes that his "trades" are so complicated and involve so many people that, even though everyone knows he stole, it takes a long time and a lot of investigation to prove it.
  • Rebecca punishes herself by throwing her parasol down the well. The parasol gets caught on the chain, so when someone tries to draw water, the parasol opens and gets jammed in the well.
We will draw a veil over the scene that occurred after Rebecca's return from school. You who read may be well advanced in years, you may be gifted in rhetoric, ingenious in argument; but even you might quail at the thought of explaining the tortuous mental processes that led you into throwing your beloved pink parasol into Miranda Sawyer's well.
