  • Hathaway calls a phone sex line to do a voice match with one of the suspects. Lewis signals him once they have what they need, so Hathaway ends the call in an immediate but unsuspicious way:
"I have to go. My mother's coming."
  • "Expiation".
    • The headmaster's introduction to the school and Lewis's comments during it. "Quite."
Headmaster Croft: ...you should be entirely confident of the pastoral care that your child would receive here.
Hathaway: [taking Lewis' hand] Darling, I think you should explain.
    • Laura Hobson's irritated assessment of a not-so-esteemed colleague?
Hobson: How can I put this with professional integrity? The man's a complete ninny and outstandingly crap at his job.
  • "The Quality of Mercy":
Innocent: And where is the Divine Sergeant today?
    Lewis: High Wycombe.
    Innocent: Oh joy, oh rapture.
  • This exchange:
    "I need a drink."
"You just had a cup of tea."
    "It was herbal."
    "....You do need a drink."
  • From "Fearful Symmetry": Hathaway and the baby.
"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is... somewhat repetitive."
    • Also, any reference to Noo-Noo the "something like a giraffe" baby toy, until the end when it becomes a plot point.
  • After a case in which a victim's head was bashed in with a book:
Lewis: Have you not learned anything from this case? Books are bad for your health!
Hathaway: Not if you just read them!
  • Lewis and Hathaway row a canoe down the river, even though Hathaway is dressed in a suit, while trading insults back and forth.
