• Anna has a dream in which Karenin and Vronsky are "both her husbands at once, and lavishing caresses on her". Waking up, she is completely horrified. Tolstoy may not have meant it to be funny, but imagining stiff, bureaucratic, middle-aged Karenin in a threesome is too bizarre to think of with a straight face.
