Fridge / Stubbs the Zombie

Go To

Fridge Brilliance

  • The game's premise is that a zombie revived by experimental fertilizer wreaks havoc in a city called Punchbowl. In other words, Stubbs the Zombie is a turd in the Punchbowl.

Fridge Horror

  • One cop mentions "I haven't seen brain-eating in twenty years!" implying that zombie outbreaks have happened in the Stubbs the Zombie Universe before....
  • Dr. Wye admits to Stubbs that he accidentally caused the zombie outbreak. Before that, he pretends in front of the military that he has no idea what caused the outbreak. In other words, he's covering up the fact that he's responsible for manslaughter.
    • Which also brings up this horrible implication; since he's THAT corrupt after he defected to the Americans during/after WWII and also considering that Dr. Wye is a mad scientist, it really says a lot about how corrupt he was when he was a Nazi.
  • Here's the icing on the Fridge Horror cake of this game: None of the events in the storyline of the game would have happened if Dr. Wye did not screw up!
  • Now that we've gone over the flavor and the icing on this game's Fridge Horror cake, here's the dough of the cake: There are some authoritarian undertones within Punchbowl: For example, open elitism (the two cops imply that merely being homeless is a crime in Punchbowl, to the point that Punchbowl's police will apparently arrest people who show even vague hints of being homeless). Imagine if, instead of Stubbs, a person who simply had very dirty and very damaged clothing was the one who approached the two police officers. The poor soul would have been arrested out of sheer paranoia.
  • Heaven forbid we find out how Punchbowl's law enforcement would have treated an actual homeless person.... It's bad enough that merely being homeless in Punchbowl is a crime, but it's not even for safety reasons. The reason why being a hobo is against the law in Punchbowl, according to the two aforementioned cops, is because hobos supposedly make the town look bad by "stinking up the place". In other words, the cops seem to be primarily assigned to protect their city's reputation more than its citizens.
  • Andrew Monday lies to the public that the zombie invasion is a minor problem, even when the outbreak gets so bad that the National Guard is deployed. And the citizens buy it. Couple that with the claim that Punchbowl is "free of crime, pollution, and other urban blights", it begs to question how strong of a grip Andrew Monday has on the city. Also, aside from homeless people, what else does "other urban blights" mean by Punchbowl's definition?
  • There are literally no people of color and literally no LGBT people in Punchbowl. Considering that this game is set in 1959 and the authoritarian undertones of Punchbowl, that implies a lot about what happened to them.
  • Andrew Monday hired mercenaries (albeit, ones with a silly theme, but mercs nonetheless), in order to protect him. One wonders where he hired them from.
  • Considering how corrupt Andrew Monday is implied to be thanks to the other examples of Fridge Horror about him, one wonders how long he's been like this when it comes to ruling the city. Combining Fridge Horror with Alternative Character Interpretation, was he always like this? Or was he a noble leader at first who ended up letting the power go to his head?
  • As a meta example of Fridge Horror, the fact that most of the Fridge Horror about this game has nothing to do with the main character Stubbs is Fridge Horror in of itself when one thinks about how Punchbowl had a messed-up society even before this game's Villain Protagonist went on a rampage. In a way, Punchbowl arguably deserved Stubbs' carnage.
  • Minor example: Considering how much of a perv Skegnis is, even though he at least has the decency to NOT be a rapist and NOT grope either, he still however makes offers with sexual undertones at Maggie when Maggie does NOT want that, stares at Maggie's breasts even though she clearly does not want that, and flirts with Maggie even though Maggie is clearly not interested. One wonders how often DOES he do that?
