Fridge Brilliance

• If mermaids used dolphins essentially as dogs, then it makes perfect sense why dolphins would be so friendly towards humans, even saving them from drowning: they recognize humans as relatives of their masters.
  • Or the mermaids are deliberately training them to save humans from drowning. They want us to know they're sick of fighting and want peace.
  • On a related note, the existence of mermaids would also explain why other marine mammals are equally fond of us; we're familiar enough for them to be comfortable around us.

Fridge Logic

• If having one of their members perform a Heroic Sacrifice is supposed to have been the mermaids' only defense against Megalodon, they'd have been eaten into extinction long before human sonic-weapon research could wipe them out: as nothing in the film suggests they evolved into an Explosive Breeder species, losing a mature group member every time they encounter such a predator would wipe them out by attrition.
  • Actually, altruism is a biological necessity.
  • Considering how massive Megalodon is, there's pretty much no hope of fighting one off and the Heroic Sacrifice was probably only used for that particular predator, which may not have been very common, especially in certain areas.
  • It's probably why the mermaids became a migrating species depending on where the larger predators are in the nearby area they would have to keep moving.
• Okay, so the Navy covered up the existence of mermaids to continue with their sonic weapons tests, right? But wouldn't the existence of mermaids be far, far more scientifically interesting and potentially useful than a weapon that basically amounts to a sonar pulse on steroids? Why would the Navy continue to test the weapon and orchestrate a massive coverup of the bodies that keep washing ashore instead of just testing the weapon somewhere else in uninhabited waters, like a manmade lake, and allowing the discovery to be made public? Sure, there'd be a little bad press for having killed one, but freaking mermaids!
  • The Navy wanted to experiment on the mermaids themselves, and avoid a mineshaft gap.
