Reread the review and it really isn't a good faith Fridge Horror. Instead of holding closely to the events presented in the movie and showing how those turn out bad, the author mixes in considerable speculation on what certain characters would say and do and then spins it out into a worst case scenario. I found that his doomsday scenarios had quite plausible alternative outcomes that didn't lead to despair. Removing.

* [[http://natesean.hubpages.com/hub/5-Reasons-Why-The-End-of-Kate-and-Leopold-Is-Actually-Pretty-Depressing A site discussing how they found the ending of the movie depressing]] reviews the basic events of the movie and mixes in some strong speculation about how those events will be interpreted to come up with:
** The media will spin the whole thing to make it sound like Kate was psycho and her company actually attempted to hire her. Because of this, they'll suffer a severe backlash economically.
*** ''Which is quite a stretch to suggest that an entire company will suffer because one of their employees had a possible emotional breakdown.''
** Nurse Gretchen is going to either have her medical license stripped from her or jailed for willingly letting a believed-to-be-insane patient run back out into polite society, therefore endangering both himself and others.
*** ''This assumes that Nurse Gretchen can be found incompetently negligent and aided in Stuart's escape versus her simply providing Stuart a opportunity to escape that he took advantage of''.
** Leopold is MIA and, from the perspective of the NYPD if you consider all the evidence that site lays out, Leopold looks like a monster who conspired with ex-boyfriend Stuart (the aforesaid mental patient) to [[DrivenToSuicide drive an emotionally and mentally unstable woman to jump off of Brooklyn Bridge.]]
*** ''Given that Leopold has no birth certificate, social security number or anything to prove he ever existed this is a stretch''.
** Charlie is going to have a ''hell of a time'' trying to get a job now that people know he was related to a girl who seemingly killed herself in front of him.
*** ''It's pure speculation that Charlie will be implicated in driving his sister to suicide and it seems pretty severe to ostracize a grieving brother that way.''

The movie never commits to showing elevators dissappearing, only that they all stop functioning.

* Because the inventor of the elevator is brought to modern times using time travel, all elevators start malfunctioning and eventually disappear. One of the characters explicitly brings up that if he is not returned quickly, people will vanish that would have been his descendants. Presumably the same thing would happen to them as did happen to the elevators-first they would all start gaining more severe medical problems until eventually they all died and vanished.

addressing Leopold's debt isn't really a Fridge Horror situation.

to:

* While Leopold's decision to marry Kate did nothing to address his family's debt, by the end of the film, both Leopold and Kate know with certainty that his elevator invention will be quite successful and can take aggressive steps to ensure the maximum financial return on his work. In addition, Kate ''is from the future'' and they can use her knowledge to guide investments in real estate, businesses, or stocks. They may have some lean years to live through but it seems there's considerable potential for the Mountbatten family to regain their wealth.

* Don't forget Kate and Leopold themselves. Leopold was supposed to marry into money to pay off family debt. Instead, he married a time traveler, who owns... exactly one dress. It won't be long before the debt collectors show up.
** Except that both Leopold and Kate know with certainty that his elevator invention will be quite successful and they can leverage that knowledge into profitability. Combine that with even a general idea of what New York real estate will be valuable in the future and there exists a strong potential for the Duke to rebuild his finances. They may have some lean years to live through but hardly a Fridge Horror scenario.

First off, the trope doesn't summarize the points raised in the article accurately. Second, the article makes some really unjustified assumptions about how the events of the movie will be interpreted by the press and pollce.

* This is a rare case where fridge logic delayed and altered a film after it was believed finished. In the cut of the movie screened for critics (and also the director's cut released on DVD), Stuart is Leopold's great great grandson. Critics noticed a problem with this plot point that the director hadn't. [[spoiler: When Kate travels back in time with Leopold, she becomes (and always was) Stuart's great great grandmother. * In ''KateAndLeopold'', because the inventor of the elevator is brought to modern times using time travel, all elevators start malfunctioning and eventually disappear. Presumably the same thing would happen to them as did happen to the elevators-first they would all start gaining more severe medical problems until eventually they all died and vanished.
** Also, how well is Kate going to get along stuck in the 1800s? Her job is completely impossible there, so she has no way to make a living, which leaves her dependent on Leopold (in a time without much in the way of women's rights), and if their relationship should go bad...
** Yeah, Leopold should've made that clear to her. Women of the 21st century have it ''way'' better than women of the 19th century.
** Well, she could've been a school teacher. I know, not as glamerous and awesome as the job she had in our time (not to mention the...oh yeah...''rights'' she had in our time), but she would at least have ''a job'' (though it wouldn't pay her well, if at all.)
*** She's going to be a duchess in the nineteenth century. Why would she work?
*** Because Leopold was marrying for money. Since Kate left the party in just an evening gown and she wasn't even carrying a clutch purse, the happy couple are in as much dire financial straits as Leopold was at the beginning.
