Fridge Logic

  • The last act of the movie continues to confound because of how vague the US's complicity in the events are. The movie was clearly going for a "America is an asshole" twist, but it really doesn't make any sense. Clavis and Williams's mission had always been to either kill or capture John Paul, so Williams actually trying to do that isn't a betrayal of any sort, Lucia's death aside. What would John's arrest and testimony reveal? That he's causing genocides with a subliminal messaging? How is that a problem for the United States? John Paul's motives are nothing compared to the atrocities he's unleashing, regardless. The movie tries to make it seem like the US would opt to rather kill John Paul in order to live in safety, but... that's a basic imperative of any society, regardless of how much surveillance it's undertaking? It's not like the United States is turning a blind eye to the events, either. The whole thrust of the movie is because the United States is noticing the genocides are happening and it's sending elite special forces operatives to find the cause.
