Scrooge's stinginess in this episode is in-line with his character, but it makes even more sense due to this taking place after "The Ballad of Duke Baloney!"; thanks to his bet with Glomgold, Scrooge wants to spend as little as possible.
The episode's theme of people pretending to be happier and more successful than they really are is present in all three plotlines of the episode:
There is the main plot about Donald pretending to be successful to impress his friends. At the end of the episode it is revealed that José and Panchito were doing the same.
The B-plot is about Dewey and Louie becoming obsessed with posting pictures on social media, following a "pics or it didn't happen" philosophy, ignoring Webby's advice to actually live the experience instead.
And finally, the Man-Eating Plant poses as a series of happy and friendly townspeople to lure its victims to the town.
Huey mentions trying to earn an improv merit badge, and it shows given that when Donald claims to have taken over McDuck Enterprises, the first words out of his mouth are "Yes, and...", a popular improv training technique.
So in the end, all three Caballeros decided to take this trip to meet up with the other two Caballeros. All three Caballeros lied about how successful they were in life to impress the other two, when in fact all three Caballeros were either broke or working low-income jobs that barely supported them. They really are "birds of a feather."
The three band members constantly reference something happening in Acapulco. This is probably a reference to the original Three Caballeros movie, where Donald chases around a group of playful women on Acapulco beach before getting swept away again by Panchito and Jose.
Fridge Horror
The inscription describing the Festival of the Flower mentions that the carnivorous plant wiped out the village before it was supposedly destroyed. Then we learn that the plant is alive and has been pretending to be various townsfolk. What if the plant is disguising itself as the very people it killed?
The episode's last moment is a seed from it falling and sprouting into a new plant. Who knows where it is going to spread next...
Unless it happened while Della wasn't looking, the reaction from seeing her brother drop one of her eggs while juggling them definitely won't be pretty. Considering what was implied with Dewey in present day...
