In this AU, the Ichijouji’s have outlived BOTH of their only two children. First, Osamu/Sam was still killed in a car accident (only in this version, Ken shoved him into the car’s path during an argument). And now, just a few years later, they’ve had to attend the funeral of Ken himself after Oikawa murdered him. The Ichijouji’s entire struggle to raise their sons was All for Nothing, and now they will never have any grandchildren. The Ichijouji family will die with them.
While Matt being the most abrasive of the DigiDestined is fairly in-line with his prior personality, him revealing how his dislike of the new kids is based on resentment over being replaced adds further depth when you remember part of the reason for his temporary Face–Heel Turn in the original adventure was due to being "replaced", partly by TK demonstrating the capability and independence he'd gained, and partly by Tai being a role model for TK.
