Johnathan already seemed shocked and appalled by Katrina's murder and her calling the Trio out on their planned rape of her immediately beforehand. Later, in order to frame Buffy he temporarily turns himself into Katrina. Even if it is temporary he actually has to walk around in the body of the woman he helped kill. No wonder he seems so broken and bitter at the end.
