- Towards the end of the book, Cranly asks Stephen if he would ever rob. Stephen, after a lengthy discourse on the matter, comes to the conclusion that it would pain him as much to rob as to be robbed. Now consider that J. F. Byrne, the real-life model for Cranly, and Joyce had a falling out because Joyce had used something that once happened to Byrne and Byrne had told Joyce about, for a scene earlier in the same chapter, making it sound more dubious in the retelling..
