"I do know what it's like to carry a baby and then give one up."
Anna

Together Together is a 2021 American film by Nikole Beckwith.

It stars Ed Helms as Matt, a middle-aged app developer planning to be a single father, and Patti Harrison as Anna, the 26-year-old barista who becomes Matt's gestational surrogate; the film explores their deepening unconventional friendship as the pregnancy progresses.

The film's cast also includes Tig Notaro, Julio Torres, Anna Konkle, Timm Sharp, Nora Dunn, Fred Melamed, and Evan Jonigkiet. It debuted at Sundance 2021 ahead of a theatrical release in April of that year.

Tropes:

  • Age-Gap Romance: Discussed and defied; an age-gap romance is a reasonable assumption to make after seeing fortysomething Matt and his pregnant twentysomething surrogate Anna together, but Anna thinks it's gross (even citing Woody Allen movies) and even moves out in part to minimize this assumption.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: Anna is working as Matt's surrogate and tells him that she loves him not-romantically near the end of the film. He responds similarly.
  • Shout-Out: Matt and Anna begin working through Friends after she gets pregnant.
  • Teen Pregnancy: One of the reasons Anna is being considered as a surrogate is that she had a baby as a teenager and gave it up for adoption, so, as she says, she knows what it's like to give up a baby she birthed.
  • Title Drop: The film's title comes from Anna and Jules discussing her relationship with Matt. Jules says that although Anna and Matt are not together-together (i.e. an item), they can still have a strong, special bond.
