The Shocking Miss Pilgrim is a 1947 American musical comedy film in Technicolor written and directed by George Seaton and starring Betty Grable and Dick Haymes. Most of the music is composed by Ira and Georg Gershwin.

In the late 1800s, Miss Pilgrim, a young stenographer (or typewriter) becomes the first female employee at a Boston shipping office. Although the men object to her at first, she soon charms them all, especially the handsome young head of the company. Their romance gets sidetracked when she becomes involved in the women's suffrage movement.

This film provides examples of:

  • Office Romance: Cynthia Pilgrim becomes romantically involved with her boss, John Pritchard.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Miss Pilgrim is the first, and from what we see throughout the film, and only woman to work for the Pritchard Shipping Company when she is hired on.
  • The Suffragette: Cynthia becomes involved with the women's suffrage due to the influence of John's Aunt (played by Anne Revere).
