* NotHowImDyingDeclaration: A more somber version. The ''Enterprise'' has been crippled by a shot from Kruge's ''Bird-of-Prey'', and Kruge is demanding their surrender. Kirk quietly tells his friends "I swear to you, we're not finished." He then comes up with a plan to take out the Klingon crew while saving his own, activating the ''Enterprise's'' self-destruct mechanism and then beaming out just as the Klingons are beaming in.

** Saavik described Kirk in the last movie as "so...''human''". In this one, she tells David "You're just like your father. So human."

* SelfDestructMechanism: Once again, the ''Enterprise'''s is activated. This time, however, it's not cancelled at the last second. [[spoiler: The first set of explosions kill the Klingon boarding party then blow up the bridge dome. Then charges start going off in the saucer section, causing the saucer section to begin breaking apart before another more powerful set of explosions rip off about 3/4 of the saucer secion. The ''Enterprise'' is unable to maintain orbit and is pulled in the Genesis Planet's atmosphere, burning up in the process.]]

** Kirk taunts Kruge by communicator, that he'll have "(beam) us up" to the Bird-of-Prey to get "the secret of Genesis". This calls back to the previous film where Kirk taunts Khan by communicator, that Khan will have to "come down here" (to Regula) to get him (Kirk).

* UpgradeVersusPrototypeFight: Implied through the introduction of the Excelsior; a newer and sleeker boasting of "transwarp" capabilities that is a deliberate contrast to the aging Enterprise. But Enterprise was in no condition for an actual fight after the Genesis incident, and Scotty was able to sabotage its' engines to give them a clean escape. Excelsior is later established as a friendly sister ship to Enterprise-A in ''Star Trek VI''.

* WritersCannotDoMath: Probably more of a hyperbole, but an admiral mentions to Kirk that the Enterprise is over 20 years old and given the damage from the last battle was to be decommissioned instead of refurbished. While 20 years old is a round number on when Kirk first took command, established lore indicated the ship was previously captained by Pike and April, even at the time of the film the number should have been well over 30 years. The official date that was given is 2245, almost if not exactly 40 years.
