It follows the origin story of Minnal Murali, the alter ego of Jaison, a young man who lives in the small town of Kurukkanmoola. Originally a tailor with dreams of going to America to live his life, he angers the local police force, which interferes with his passport application.
In the midst of all this, he is struck by lightning during a mysterious aligning of the planets, which grants him super strength, speed and a myriad of other powers. He uses these powers to settle his score with the police force, adopting the name Minnal Murali (Minnal meaning lightning) to preserve his identity.
Unbeknownst to him, Shibu, a fellow resident of the town who works in a tea shop, was struck by lightning at the same time as Jaison, developing many of the same powers as well as telekinesis. Shibu is not above using the Minnal Murali name to commit acts of cruelty, and it is up to Jaison to fulfill the responsibilities his powers have given him.
Minnal Murali contains examples of:
- Brought to You by the Letter "S": In his costume, Jaison has the Malayalam 'മ' on his chest, the alliterative first letter of his superhero name, stylised with a lightning symbol.
- I Believe I Can Fly: Subverted, as Jaison assumes he must be able to fly, only to fall flat.
- Lightning Can Do Anything: It grants the powers of the hero as well as the Big Bad. Granted, there is a mysterious aligning of the planets that also seems to contribute, but the lightning strike is the actual event that grants the powers.
- Period Piece: The technology and the dressing styles indicate this, as well as a reference to the movie Manichitrathazhu, which came out in 1993, and seems to be only a few years old in the film's universe.
- Small Town Boredom: Jaison's primary motivation for most of the story is to get his passport in order so he can go live in America. He ends up learning the Aesop of Home Sweet Home and deciding to stay to help the people of Kurukkanmoola.
