"The transmission is a message. Deus. God."

Deus (also known as DEUS: The Dark Sphere) is a 2022 science fiction film directed by Steven Stone. It stars Claudia Black , David O'Hara, Richard Blackwood, and Crystal Wu. The film opens up with the crew of the research spacecraft, the Achilles, waking up from 8 months of hibernation after traveling from Earth to Mars. The Achilles has been sent to investigate a mysterious black sphere has been discovered in the orbit of the red planet. After waking up, however, the crew discover the Sphere is transmitting a single word in every Earth language ever known - Deus.

Deus provides examples of:

  • Ax-Crazy: Si. He tries to murder everyone of the crew under inferred religious zeal.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The sphere on Mars has been destroyed and cannot be used to promote Vance's Cold Equation plan. However, the entire crew of the Achilles, sans Karla Grey, is dead and with the bulk of the ship having been destroyed, it will take Karla a long time ("7 years, 8 months, 17 weeks, 5 days, and 16 hours" according to the ship AI) to return to Earth to warn the people of Earth of Vance's crimes.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Karla Grey isn't the only one who curses in this movie, but she definitely drops the most f-bombs.
  • Death of a Child: In the first few minutes of the film, we find out that Karla Grey had a daughter that died. We are never told how, but it still affects her during the film.
  • Dwindling Party: one-by-one the crew of the Achilles is picked off in various ways.
  • Final Girl:Karla Grey is the only survivor of the lethal events of the mission.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Ulph. He takes one of the Achilles's cores and detonates to destroy the sphere.
  • Say My Name: Multiple characters use Karla's full name several times throughout the movie.
  • The Stinger: Yes, there is a post-credits scene. Karla, who’s cast more than one exasperated expletive at the Achilles’ fully-voiced onboard AI computer, has the tables turned when the AI lobs an unexpected F-bomb her way.
