Badlapur is a 2015 action thriller Bollywood film directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Varun Dhawan. The film took inspiration from the novel Death's Dark Abyss by Italian writer Massimo Carlotto.

The film follows Raghu, who seeks vengeance upon the people who murdered his wife and child 15 years ago during a bank robbery gone wrong. As the story progresses, we see Raghu's internal conflict and desperation for revenge.

Tropes associated with Badlapur include:

  • Bank Robbery: There is a bank robbery during the first act of the movie

  • Dead Star Walking: Yami Gautam's presence was promoted heavily in the movie. Her character dies in the opening bank robbery.

  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: Raghu starts off as a good husband/dad, however the death of his family slowly makes him more and more unhinged as the movie progresses. By the end, he is a full on villain

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Raghu loves his family and Liak loves his girlfriend.

  • Face/Heel Double-Turn: Liak starts off as the Big Bad while Raghu is the unambiguously likable protagonist. However, in his obsessive quest for revenge, Raghu keeps slipping into evil to the point where by the end, Raghu seems to be more of a Big Bad than Liak ever was.

  • Revenge Before Reason: Raghu falls under this trope because he is blinded by the desire for revenge

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Liak might be a criminal and a murderer, but he genuinely cares for Jhimli. His inner goodness is solidly proven when he takes the blame for Raghu's crimes to allow Raghu to get a chance to let go off his demons.

  • Villainous Rescue: Liak takes the blame for Raghu's crimes and gives Raghu a second chance at living life

  • Villain Protagonist: By the end of the film, Raghu has raped multiple girls, killed an innocent girl who had nothing to do with Raghu's family's murder and murdered a man who was trying to leave his past behind and live a normal life.

  • What the Hell, Hero?: Liak gives a very well-deserved one at the end to Raghu when he tells him that while Liak did kill Raghu's wife, he did so accidentally while Raghu cold-bloodedly murdered a lot of innocent people in his quest for revenge.
