"I'm going to enjoy being part of the sky, Dad"

Babyteeth is a 2019 Australian drama/comedy film directed by Shannon Murphy. It stars Eliza Scanlen as sixteen-year-old Milla, Toby Wallace as Moses, and Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn as Milla's parents.

It premiered at film festivals in 2019 and worldwide limited release and streaming in 2020, and it's not related at all to Baby Teeth (the book).

It is about Milla, a teenage girl dying of cancer before her sixteenth birthday. While Milla's parents grieve her prematurely, Milla falls in love with Moses, a 23-year-old homeless drug addict who literally runs into her on the train platform. When her parents realise Milla may never experience a first love again, they invite Moses to move in despite their misgivings about him.

It's a comedy.

Tropes:

  • Age-Gap Romance: Moses being 23 to Milla's 16 is just one of the reasons Milla's parents are uncomfortable with their burgeoning relationship.
  • Baldness Means Sickness: Protagonist Milla is dying of cancer and has the bald head to prove it.
  • Bittersweet 17: Milla accepts her likely death after her seventeenth birthday.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Milla is bald, but she sometimes wears a brightly-colored blue-green wig to show that she is still a Blithe Spirit despite that.
