! Swirlix Line

!! Morphs [Oak Catalog #]

*Swirlix [#684]
*Slurpuff [#685]

!! Appearance

Swirlix are small white bundles of fluffy, thin sticky string standing on pink three-toed paws with a short, thick pink tail. Their face, somehow visible on top of the fluff, consists of a pair of red eyes, a tiny black nose, and a large maw with a visibly emerging tongue and a pair of tiny fangs that are hidden when shut. Two bulges above the eyes could, in theory, be their ears, as they are marked with pink tips, but this isn't clear on first viewing. An alternative coloring does exist, with the fluff being a very light brown and the pink portions of their body taking on a more chocolate color.

A Slurpuff has a much more solid consistency, although there is still a small amount of flexibility to their form, much akin to certain sweet pastries. Their body is pudgy and stout, divided at the neck by a wavy pinkish red collar marking; a similar red dot is on the left side of their chest, a pair of stubby arms located just under the collar, and the whole mass rests on a pair of three-toed pink paws. While the Slurpuff's face is almost identical to a Swirlix's, there is the addition of pink 'hair' piled atop the head, with two pink bulges on either side and a dripping, reddish pink sphere atop the whole thing. Slurpuff that evolve from Swirlix with a brown coloration will retain said coloration; their feet and hair will be chocolate-colored, while their collar and head-sphere will be a maroon shade.

!! Notable Biology

Analysis of the Swirlix line has caused quite a stir among pokemon professionals, as they defy many basic laws of anatomy. While the line does have a basic skeleton, their only defined organs appear to be their eyes, nose, and digestive system; literally everything else is maintained by their sticky floof or pudge in a form of 'self-pumping vein' assortment. Furthermore, Swirlix are less hampered by gravity than should be possible; while they do not outright fly or hover, their hang time is greater than other similarly sized creatures. It is presumed this is because of the psychic field that permeates members of the Swirlix line; they do not have a functional brain, but instead seem to have an intelligence mounted in this field itself.

Even more interesting is their method of evolution. The Swirlix must consume a specific form of enhanced sugar in order to double their mass and generate the pudgier, larger Slurpuff. This type of sugar is not found in nature, but a family of chefs in Cyllage city have developed a secret recipe of pastry they call 'whipped dream' which can induce the evolution; a Swirlix can either eat a large number of these or, for unknown reasons, be traded with just one to induce evolution. The family does have its own line of Swirlix and Slurpuff as a result; the Slurpuff's incredibly sensitive nose makes it a useful baking assistant.

Due to the Swirlix line's decentralized anatomy and its love for sugars in all forms, the pokemon has a large amount of energy flowing through its floof. They can also release this sugar in large bursts; this sweet veil keeps both Swirlix and any allies in battle from falling asleep due to the constant sugar rush (although a post-battle crash is not unheard of for their allies). In a smaller captive population, however, there is a mutation that prevents this veil from forming; the Swirlix and Slurpuff with this mutation compensate by hyperstimulating themselves if they're unburdened
from whatever they hold.

!! Habitat

The Swirlix line is one of the few known pokemon to have originated in the Dream World; at some point prior to its discovery, the Swirlix migrated en masse out of the Dream World into the Kalos region, where they were almost instantly subjected to a predatory slaughter by native pokemon looking for a quick sweet meal. A small population was apparently 'rescued' by a family, who took to raising them in Cyllage city; over time, the Swirlix and Slurpuff became domestic assistants and helped establish Cyllage's cooking industry. Most modern Swirlix members are either owned by a chef of the city or have migrated to the nearby Route 7, presumably to smell the flowers.

!! Diet

Swirlix and Slurpuff require sugar to a large degree, to the point that some people believe Swirlix cannot eat anything but sweets. While this is not technically true, they can get most if not all of their required nutrients from pastries and candies; they do also require a small amount of good cheer to feed off of, however, and will generally find it by baking snacks for their friends.

!! Hazards

Despite their small stature, both Swirlix and Slurpuff have an incredible amount of potential power contained within their frames. A Swirlix is capable of quickly encasing attackers in sticky thread and bouncing off; while a Slurpuff loses this ability, they are capable of surprising feats of agility. The psychic field both morphs have can produce both defensive shields and bright, dazzling gleams; they can also be trained to generate fire, electricity, and even manipulate weather.

However, despite their potential power, the Swirlix line is extremely nonaggressive and tends to only attack when their food source is threatened. Most of the dangers associated with Swirlix are more the result of their rascally behavior and minor household accidents; Slurpuff are far better trained, but might react poorly to people who degrade their cooking.

!! Social Structure

While there is no true social structure in the Swirlix line, Slurpuff are able to command respect and direct the Swirlix in their home to some minor degree in return for providing pastries and other sweets. Swirlix are easily distracted, however, and usually wander out of the safety of their homes after random sweet scents; this is presumably the reason the route 7 population remains stable even as they are constantly consumed by local predators.

!! Courting and Childrearing

Once or twice a year, there is a great Slurpuff baking contest, where the Slurpuff of Cyllage compete to create new and interesting foodstuffs. This also serves to attract Swirlix from outside the Slurpuff's own home; over the course of the day, Slurpuff will capture Swirlix of the opposite gender and place them in donut boxes or other such sugarcoated containers for storage. After the competition, the Slurpuff will mate with the Swirlix before releasing them; female Slurpuff will later make a nest of eggs in the box, while female Swirlix will simply lay their eggs in randomly whenever they feel the need. Young Swirlix who emerge from nests are considered the Slurpuff mother's servants until they either run away or evolve; Swirlix from random eggs may integrate into these groups or merely run wild.

!! In Human Society

The Swirlix line is scientifically intriguing, as stories regarding their 'creation' mirror the methods of taking Pokemon from the Dream World used in Unova. Indeed, investigation into the Dream World does reveal a remnant population of Swirlix and Slurpuff, but so scattered and rare that it is assumed they are almost extinct in that setting. Most stories prior to their evacuation describe them as being a sort of 'chef's muse' or even being formed from the dreams of bakers; whether or not this is true is unclear, but it would certainly explain their almost impossible biology.

Modern Swirlix and Slurpuff are typically regarded as mascots for some baking group or another. They don't show up in stories as protagonists, often being relegated to side roles or bit characters if they are acknowledged at all, but they are almost always in some sort of chef-related role. One notable exception is in a local child's show, where a curious Swirlix is always asking questions and getting into trouble through various shenanigans.
