Marinette Dupain-Cheng receives a family heirloom from her mother on her tenth birthday: a necklace with an eye catching spider motif. Unknown to Sabine, that was the Miraculous of Order, and her daughter now became Rassi's new wielder... who cultivates an unnatural amount of chaos that Marinette will have to balance in her path to become a Guardian... And if she gains a lot of pocket-sized gods to care and dote on, then that's entirely her business.
The Shadowed Guardian
is a Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction by That_WildChild. It is the first installment in the Order’s Chosen series. It is complete and has an ongoing sequel, An Order Of Shadows. It also has a side story called Out of Order, which contains extra canon scenes from across the fanfic series, so relevant information from that will be included here.
The fanfic contains examples of:
- Berserk Button: Rassi apparently has some very big issues involving wizards, considering the rant he went on when Marinette brought them up....the last time she had asked about magical disciplines they’d gone on nearly a half hour rant about their burning desire to slap every single wizard in existence at least thrice.
- Broken Pedestal: After secretly translating a passage of her ancestor’s journal that talks about the Guardians, Marinette questions whether Rassi actually cared about her or was just grooming her to rebuild the Order of Guardians. She gets so angry that she stops wearing his Miraculous for a while, though she forgives him once she’s had taken some time to cool down.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Grimm, the Kwami of Death. Despite frightening nature of domain and powers, she’s firmly on the side of good. Unfortunately over the past two millennium she’s had almost nothing but violent warlords and unhinged psychopaths for wielders, which has left her with a rather dark reputation and led the Order of Guardians assuming her Miraculous had become corrupted.
- In Spite of a Nail: Despite Marinette was not chosen by Fu, she is on the path to become a Guardian of the Miraculous.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling: As the something mentioned below draws closer, a nexus of magical energy starts forming in Paris causing Marinette’s magical senses to go haywire.
- Someday This Will Come in Handy: Rassi tells Marinette that her studies in Psychology and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder will help her in future, even if at the moment, she can't help Grimm.
- Vagueness Is Coming: Throughout the story its repeatedly mentioned that something is coming, something that is felt even by characters without obvious supernatural abilities.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Marinette and Chloé's relationship is moving towards this.
- Weirdness Magnet: Rassi notes that a side effect of Marinette bonding with him is that the chaos around her will increase to balance out the order she now embodies. By the end of the story she’s met the Kwamis of Death, Rebirth, Chaos, and made friends with a ghost.
