Told primarily through text messages between the characters, the fic follows the students of Canterlot High as they investigate the reason for Rainbow Dash spending a lot of time in Principal Celestia's office.

- Anti-Climax: After Micro Chips sets up a hidden camera in Principal Celestia's office and the students are all watching, Rainbow Dash's father, Bow Hothoof, sits on the camera right as Principal Celestia begins to explain what's happening.
- Companion Cube: The Flim-Flam Brothers sell Flash Sentry a vacuum cleaner, which Flash proceeds to name "Earl" and treat like it's his son.
- Diegetic Musical: Flash Sentry lampshades that the student body usually politely ignores when someone bursts out in a spontaneous musical number, but when he hears Diamond Tiara singing a heartbreaking solo ballad, he's conflicted about if he should go help her.
- Driving Question: Why does Rainbow Dash keep getting called to Principal Celestia's office? The answer: Her grandmother died, and she's heartbroken and needs space to grieve in private. Celestia is giving her that space, and the only reason she leaves the office and goes back to class for a while is because Celestia can't stay in her office the entire day, and Rainbow Dash can't stay there if Celestia isn't in the office herself.
- Epistolary Novel: The story is told primarily through texts between various characters, with a few recorded statements appearing in later chapters.
- Great Escape: At one point, Pinkie plans to break Rainbow Dash out of Principal Celestia's office, convinced she's in trouble. It doesn't happen in the end though, because Fluttershy didn't bring her all the supplies she asked for.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Trixie has a moment of this when she realizes what could have happened if her theory that Rainbow Dash and Principal Celestia were secret lovers had left the school.
- Noodle Incident: Rarity mentions being sent to Principal Celestia's office because the sequins on her outfit were "so shiny they were blinding your fellow peers."
- Noodle Implements: Pinkie Pie's list of items necessary to break Rainbow Dash out of the principal's office includes a grappling hook, balloons, brownie batter, and an inflatable boat.
- Only Sane Man: Sunset, Twilight, and Fluttershy are the only students who respect Rainbow's privacy and DON'T try to find out what's going on. Pinkie is a subversion - she does respect Rainbow's privacy, but she also plots to break Rainbow Dash out of the office at one point, thinking she's being held against her will.
- Running Gag: Lyra asking Bon Bon for her history notes.

- Trixie considers doing this to get out of dissecting a frog in biology.
- She later throws a smoke bomb as part of an attempt to get sent to the principal's office herself.
- When the cops show up at Canterlot High during the students' break-in/meeting to finish the video themselves, she throws down ten more and runs for it. They set off the fire alarm and sprinklers.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Micro Chips was definitely not full-on bawling over the loss of his camera.
- Teacher/Student Romance: Trixie starts a rumor that the reason Rainbow Dash keeps getting called to the Principal's office is because she and Principal Celestia are in a secret relationship.
- Tempting Fate: Chapter Four ends with Applejack telling Pinkie that she's glad the weekend has arrived, so she can get a break from hearing about Rainbow Dash as she doesn't think it will leave the school. The next chapter has Zephyr Breeze getting involved.
- What the Hell, Hero?: After the truth is revealed, Rainbow Dash calls everyone (with the exception of Sunset, Pinkie, Fluttershy, and Twilight, who let her have her privacy and never tried to find out what was going on) out over their actions to find out the truth.
