Brockton Bay's biggest gang is Empire Eighty Eight, a Neo Nazi gang that requires you hurt a member of a minority as an initiation. On a lark, Hookwolf attacks a synagogue on Yom Kippur. Charlotte Morgenstern, a fresh trigger, decides to get revenge. Nimrod
is about what happens to her and the city around her as she does it.
This fic provides examples of:
- Ascended Extra: Charlotte is a very minor character in Worm, whose Jewishness is alluded to for exactly one line. Melanie Fitts is never named in canon, only in one of the earlier drafts.
- Asshole Victim: Virtually all of Charlotte's targets are unabashed Nazis.
- Broken Pedestal: "Melanie Fitts" (a.k.a. Faultline) proves to be this to Charlotte after she helps Empire Eighty Eight seemingly capture Charlotte.
- Death by Adaptation:
- Purity survived the canon events of Worm, but gets decapitated by Charlotte here.
- Faultline and her crew survive the events of Worm well into the sequel Ward. Here, Charlotte kills them all after they capture her.
- Karma Houdini: Coil and Charlotte both end the fic with no punishment for the mass murders they committed, save however they punish themselves.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Charlotte has a near-emotional breakdown when she's meeting with Coil in a restaurant after killing Faultline, miserably noting to Coil how guilty she feels about sleeping in the bed of the woman she'd just murdered (as she'd been staying at the Fitts family's house after her own home had been burned to the ground by Empire Eighty Eight).
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The entire plot of the story is Charlotte slowly and methodically wiping out Empire Eighty Eight for having attacked the last active synagogue in the city, killed her rabbi, and burned her family's house down.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Kaiser attempts to prepare Empire Eighty Eight to fight against Charlotte by getting rid of all of their available iron tools and associated items and replacing them with aluminum. Unfortunately for him, Charlotte's powers are metal-based, not magnetism-based, and so she's easily able to kill them regardless.
