'Heirs Of Fate' is a Yu-gi-oh fanfic series started by 7th Librarian in 2020

The series itself is an alternate timeline to the Yu-gi-oh 5Ds continuity, taking place almost two decades after Yu-gi-oh GX, taking effort to tie together the lore from the two prior series with that of 5Ds and explore the logical, yet world-shaking consequences of living in a world dominated by Duel Monsters and with ancient magical evils and artefacts crawling out of the woodwork. With the Millienium Items scattered to the winds once again, echoes of Darkness absorbing the Earth still being felt and the rise of the war between the Crimson Dragon and Crimson Devil, the world is fast approaching a turning point that may well destroy everything...

The first story, Heirs of Fate, deals with Bellerophon 'Lero' Pegasus, the adopted son of Duel Monsters creator Maximillian Pegasus. With his father in a coma for the last two years, Lero learns that the Board of Directors sees no future without the game's creator and is intending to sell the company out from under Lero. A form of salvation comes with the arrival of Sumire Ishtar, who not only claims to be Seto Kaiba's daughter, but Lero's wife via an old marriage contract. Things are further complicated when a second marriage contract concerning the Kaiba family enters the picture and so things are settled as they always are - with a Duel Monsters tournament that the whole world is watching. As if Lero wasn't under enough pressure...

The second story, Nightmare Troubador, starts six months after the first story. Now confined to a wheelchair as the curse of the Egyptian Gods slowly kills him and with Sumire now the new CEO of I2, Lero finds he has nothing to do but wait for the ineveitable and maybe figure out what this strange red dragon tattoo is on his arm and what this 'Crimson Dragon' is. But the past isn't fully laid to rest just yet - for enemies lost to the Shadow Games have come crawling out of the darkness for revenge and other divine powers and hidden enemies are not content to just wait for Lero to die...

Heirs of Fate contains examples of:

  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: Alongside the series canon of Shadow Games, the first story resolves around something just as heavy - a tournament, broadcast live to the world, is used to determine which of Sumire's marriage contracts takes precedence and is therefore the legal one. As extra goodies, the winning side will get Duel Monsters and Industrial Illusions due to the publicity factor meaning the loser will become ruined by the public outcry.
  • Anime Hair: In keeping with the tradition, the protagonists of the series have a wide variety of hair colours. Bellerophon, despite being Egyptian, has lilac hair. Kaede has two different shades of red, Rosemary has inherited Ryou Bakura's white hair. The Pegasus manservant, Plato, has long flowing teal hair.
  • Artificial Limbs: Ishizu Ishtar has her left arm, leg and eye all replaced by metal counterparts, having been injured in the same accident that put Maximillian Pegasus in his coma.
  • Badass Biker: Jackie is one, her opening scene revealing she runs around with some biker Duel Gangs as a freelance duelist under the name 'Straitjacket'.
  • Hates Their Parent: Sumire refuses to acknowledge herself as Seto Kaiba's daughter, declaring she 'has no father' as Seto no only ignored her mother's feelings, but his gigantic reputation and ego are an impossibly large shadow for her to get out from under.
  • No Kill like Overkill: During her duel in the Bride Tournament, Kaede attempts to defeat her opponent by handing out more than 20,000 points of damage with a trap card. It doesn't work out.
  • Official Couple: Lero and Sumire are this by dint of a marriage contract their parents sign, to the point they both lose their family names and status if they divorce.
  • Oh, Crap!!: Lots of people have these when an opponent reveals a powerful monster, hidden trap or an unsettling surprise. Lero seems to get the most, ranging from being told Sumire is his wife to a Darkness Game covering the entire island of Duelist Kingdom.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Darkness Games are depicted as voids of swirling midnight blue and black with a lot of purple. Most characters comment how cold and isolated they feel. In the second story, shadow games are played with burning rings of bitterly cold purple and black fire around the players, with the off-putting twist being that they're eerily warm and comforting otherwise.
