We Found Love in a Hopeless Place is a Supernatural High School AU, focusing on the relationships between Dean and Castiel and Sam and Lucifer, along with their families, friends, and enemies. It contains explicit content such as drug use, gay sex, homophobia, profanity, and some blasphemy. It also has many qualities of a Song Fic, although the songs are actually playing in the context of the story.

It can be found on fanfiction.net, here: We Found Love in a Hopeless Place. It should be noted that at 423,102 words, it is quite a long read. It is also complete, with fourteen chapters.

We Found Love in a Hopeless Place provides examples of:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Lucifer, Crowley, and Dean all seem to be popular with the ladies to some extent, although the level to which Dean is "bad" could be debated.
  • Antivillain: Both Lucifer and Michael could count, as could at a greater stretch Crowley. While all of them do terrible things, most of the time they have reasons behind them and don't really want to be going through with it.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The main reason Lucifer starts to notice Sam is because Sam said something nice about him unprovoked—something that doesn't happen often when you're named after the devil.
  • Berserk Button: Don't hurt any one of Castiel, Lucifer, Sam, and Dean where one of the others can see you. It's a really, really bad idea.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sam Winchester is a nice, studious boy who also happens to be the overall winner of the cage matches that Lucifer is holding, beating boys much larger than he is.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Dean towards Sam and Lucifer and, surprisingly, Michael towards Castiel.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: There are a few, but the best one is probably Sam and Lucifer's first: Sam has just beaten all the other contenders in the Fight Club-style fights, meaning he's officially Lucifer's second-in-command, and he pulls Lucifer up and kisses him in front of everyone.
  • Cute Mute: Castiel has problems talking with people unless he's under the influence of drugs.
  • Expy: Castiel and Crowley's trip to Europe is full of people who are suspiciously similar to characters from Good Omens. Phil, the man Crowley eventually ends up with, is a blatant Expy of Aziraphale.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: Michael is one of these, to the point of throwing Lucifer out of the house for almost kissing a boy. However, Sam's age and inebriated state were also factors, and Michael both regrets his decision and also gets over his attitude.
  • Kick the Dog: A lot of these happen, but most noticeable are Michael calling Lucifer a disgrace and threatening to break every bone in his body in Charlie's class, and Dean refusing to take Castiel back after learning that he'd been sleeping with Crowley to pay off a debt.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Dean is some version of this for Castiel; when Dean breaks up with him, Cas' life takes a dramatic turn for the worse.
  • Manly Tears: All of the boys cry at one point or another, often for totally understandable reasons.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: The actual narrator of the story is a writer, Chuck, and this story is a book he's writing based on the lives of his old classmates.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Oh my god, does it ever. Many conflicts in the story could have been avoided if the characters talked about what they were doing or trying to do.
  • Song Fic: Not quite: there are songs scattered throughout the story, but they're usually playing in the background. That being said, they're usually incredibly appropriate.
