The Making of Monsters is a series written by shuofthewind. It's an Alternative Universe of Daredevil (2015) where instead of going off to Culver University (and therefore meeting Jane Foster), Darcy Lewis ran away from home and ended up with her cousin, the attorney Jen Walters, in New York City. She ended up enrolling at Columbia, decided to focus on pre-law, and met two other young students — Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock.

There are four fics:

  • The Price of War, a rewrite of Season 1
  • the end is unknown (but i think i'm ready)
  • AKA Cloak and Dagger (a follow-up to season 1 of Jessica Jones (2015))
  • The Source of Darkness, a rewrite of Season 2

The Making of Monsters provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Darcy's mother, and it's but downright stated that Tandy Bowen's mother was too.
  • All for Nothing: Darcy mentions in chapter 2 of The Price of War that half the guys Daredevil throws to the police end up back on the street because of the tainted evidence.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Wesley offers Darcy a job. She is under several sniper scopes while doing so.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Discussed. Foggy is furious that Matt has insisted again and again about safety while at the same time doing something as dangerous as vigilantism, calling him an hypocrite. Darcy defends him, saying that, in Matt's point of view, there is not contradictions: he can pull himself in danger because he doesn't consider himself as important as the people he loves.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: A major theme on the series is about how delicate is the thread Daredevil (and later, Lilith) walk in.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Both adverted and played straight. Darcy learns that Jen gave Matt the shovel talk years ago.
  • Internal Reveal: Darcy finding out about Daredevil. Also, Karen finds out sooner than in canon.
  • Secret Identity: Matt and Daredevil, obviously. Then there is Darcy and Lilith, and Kate and Hawkingbird (eventually, Hawkeye).
  • Street Urchin: Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson are homeless runaway kids in this verse.
