On the Pony Earth, the minor Cosmic being Wise Dreamer, incarnate in his Aspect as White-Beard the Grey, taught Trixie Lulamoon the art of stage magic, and in the process taught her enough morality and wisdom that she avoided falling into Nightmare. But Wise Dreamer can't be everywhere at once; and there is no current analogue of him in the Humanoid world. When Wise Dreamer learns that the humanoid version of Trixie is in danger of falling into Nightmare, he reaches across the void to recruit an inhabitant of that world to aid her during this crucial phase of her education.
But Trixie has a problem with authority figures. Who can he find whom he can be pretty certain Trixie will love and respect enough to heed?

- Alternate Timeline: Takes place in three, one that, if not the main Shadow Wars timeline, is pretty close, one where a human Trixie is a 14 year old student, and one where a human Trixie made a Deal with the Devil and became Nightmare Delusion.
- Deal with the Devil: In one timeline, Trixie made one with the Shadows, becoming Nightmare Delusion
- Expy: Wisedreamer is one of Gandalf. In-universe however, Word of God says that the opposite is true, with Gandalf being based of a dream Tolkien had of Wisedreamer.
- For Want Of A Nail: White-Beard the Grey didn’t teach Trixie in a timeline based off Equestria Girls leading to the version of her there making a Deal with the Devil with the Shadows instead of fighting them like in An Extended Performance, becoming Nightmare Delusion and spreading madness instead of sanity. The fic revolves around a plan to prevent this from happening in other timelines as well.
