* CrapsackWorld: If you're a sane person in this show, don't expect to get any leeway. Everybody's either incredibly racist, perverted, corruptible, immoral, socially incompetent, or mentally ill. And if you're someone like Meg, it's a Crapsack Universe.
** CrapsaccharineWorld: The earlier seasons, though still ripe with darker humor, were played with a much more whimsical sitcom-esque setup, with most of the cast (even antagonists such as bank robbers) being highly cheery and friendly. It is only later on the cynical tone kicks in and the show evolves into a high order Crapsack World.

* CringeComedy: Starting around season 10, the show started to rely mainly on shock humour and cringe comedy for its gags. One of the most obvious examples is the episode "Fresh Heir", in which Chris manually stimulates his grandfather1s genitals, and later agrees to marry his own father.

* CulturalPersonalityMakeover: Peter has done this to varying degrees more than once, though usually to a more extreme and offensive end. He discovers a black ancestor and immediately changes from his "slave name" and wears African clothing. Less extreme were the times he discovered being technically Mexican or Irish

* BecauseYouCanCope: The controversial ending to "Seahorse Seashell Party". In this episode, the Griffin family end up trapped indoors during a hurricane and begin to, as per family tradition, gang up on Meg - their treatment of Meg going from gentle teasing to full-blown physical, psychological and emotional abuse. Meg finally snaps and tears down each family member in a series of blistering The Reason You Suck Speeches, explaining exactly how and why Peter, Lois and Chris have mistreated her. The family are stunned by her words and begin to tear into each other as well. In the end, Meg realizes that her BigScrewedUpFamily are so dysfunctional that they need a "lightning rod" to absorb all their neuroses and problems, or the family will inevitably destroy themselves. She resigns herself to being that lightning rod for their abuse to save the family, and Brian praises this decision as a sign of maturity and responsibility. Many viewers saw this as an incredibly BrokenAesop about justifying and even embracing abuse because "you can take the punishment" and reacted with outrage. To this day "Seahorse Seashell Party" is regarded as one of the worst episodes in the series.
