Dummied Out / Shin Megami Tensei NINE

Go To

Looking through the game's files and source code reveals a fairly large amount of cut content, which may have been meant for the scrapped online features. Some of it would eventually be revisited in Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE, but for the rest, players are left to wonder What Could Have Been.

New demon designs

  • Izanami received a new design for this game, but it was ultimately left unused. The design still exists in the game's files as an RTS map icon, and would eventually be used for most of Izanami's future appearances in the series.
  • A non-Devil Children design for the Seraphim was made for this game, but was ultimately scrapped, with the RTS map icon being the only trace of it left. This design would also be used for its future appearances.
  • Tokisada, a demon based on Amakusa Shiro, was originally intended to appear as part of the Fiend race, but was ultimately scrapped. His design still exists in the game's files as an RTS map icon, and would eventually see use in all of his future appearances.

Returning demons

  • Cherub's Shin Megami Tensei I design is in the game's files as an RTS map icon.
  • Gaap, a relatively obscure Fallen demon, has an RTS map icon, but is otherwise unused. Curiously, this is also the only 3D game that Gaap is known to appear in.
  • The names of a large number of demons are present in the game's files, but the demons themselves are not present, even as leftover assets:
    • Throne is listed as part of the Divine race. It's the only order of angels to not be present either in the game or as an art asset.
    • Nanto Seikun and Hokuto Seikun, the two Superbosses of Devil Summoner, are referenced as part of the Deity and Reaper races, respectively. Their unique Secret A.I. Moves are also in the code as well, although the implications of that are currently unknown.
      • Interestingly, both of them are listed under their Chinese names, Nandou Xingjun and Beidou Xingjun. English localizations of the series wouldn't do so until the HD re-release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, roughly twenty years later.
    • Scylla is included as part of the Wilder race. If implemented fully, this would have been her first appearance in a mainline game since Shin Megami Tensei if....
    • Azazel and Masakado are listed as part of the Fallen and Fiend race, respectively. This is also true in Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE, suggesting that this was one of the ideas revisited in that game.
    • Chi You is listed as part of the Fury race. Curiously, this is the only time that ever occured — even IMAGINE lists him as a Tyrant.
    • Xi Wangmu is listed as part of the Lady race. If implemented, this would have been her first mainline appearance, predating Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, her actual mainline debut, by about seven years. This would have also been her only appearance in a 3D game until she was added to Shin Megami Tensei Liberation: Dx2.
    • Cybele is also listed as part of the Lady race, predating her proper mainline debut in Strange Journey Redux by about fifteen years.
    • Echidna is listed as part of the Drake race. If implemented, this would have been her only appearance in a 3D game until Dx 2, as well as the only time she was not part of the Vile race.

Miscellaneous / Unsorted

  • Raguel, Sariel, both forms of Maria, Lucifer, Adam, Eve, and Yaldabaoth have RTS map icons, despite not appearing until after the last Hacking Minigame in Chapter 8.
  • Two leftover textures for a model of Maya Amano from Persona 2 exist in the game's files. Presumably, they were used for an engine test of some kind.
  • This incredibly odd fractal pattern. Presumably, it was either a background or some kind of placeholder.
