* There was a short-lived development studio in the 2000's known as Punchline who created UsefulNotes/PlayStation2 software. Their first effort was VideoGame/Chulip in 2002, a wacky VideoGame/AnimalCrossing-like bit of Japanese fare involving LoveAtFirstSight and running around kissing everyone that you could manage. Four years later, they put out the much, much darker VideoGame/RuleOfRose, a SurvivalHorror game that embraces western imagery and tropes and thrives on children in dangerous situations.

* Creator/IdSoftware did this. Their earlier publication, Videogame/CommanderKeen, was a lighter hearted game that was quite intended for children and maybe relatively more innocent hearted adults. Id Software is famous for popularising the first person shooter in the form of VideoGame/Wolfenstein3D and Franchise/Doom. The Doom series in turn gets progressively darker (literally) and edgier. The first game is quite colorful and most areas are brightly lit. VideoGame/DoomII and VideoGame/Doom64 have an overall darker ambiance and a greater emphasis on horror. VideoGame/Doom3 takes it to the extreme, with monochromatic textures, realistic gore, and many areas in total darkness. Strangely enough, the characters of all these games appear to be related, as discussed here

Then arrived VideoGame/QuakeI which drops id's tongue-in-cheek humor in favor of an oppressive atmosphere in its visuals, its soundtrack, and its lovecraftian monsters.
