Sharmila Tagore is currently retired, but she had a long, colorful career from 1959 to 2010, appearing both in arthouse and commercial films opposite leading men like Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Sanjeev Kumar. She married a famous cricket player and Indian team captain Mansoor Ali Khan, the Nawab (or Prince) of Pataudi, and gave him a son and heir, in the shape of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. She is descended from Rabindranath Tagore, a famous poet who wrote the lyrics to India's national anthem.
