Comic Book / Katara And The Pirates Silver

Go To

Katara and the Pirate's Silver is a standalone graphic novel set in the Avatar Franchise, focusing on Katara.

The book is an Interquel set during the events of "Book Two: Earth" AKA the second season of the original show, though less so fills in any gaps and more so acts as an unseen adventure which sees Katara being briefly operated from the group and having to join up with a crew of pirates to get back to them.

Katara and the Pirate's Silver provides examples of:

  • Bald of Authority: Jiang, the leader of a pirate crew, has a shaved head. May also count as Delinquent Hair, given she's a shameless, but likable criminal who doesn't give a crap about society's rules.
  • Exact Words: Jiang says she'll make "plenty of silver" off the stolen medicine to Katara and later accepts some silver colored lilies as payment for it.
  • Hypocrite: The Fire Nation soldier apparently sees the idea of conquering the world as bad and thinks fighting against those trying to do so is justified no matter what...Except if the Fire Nation are the conquerors, of course.
  • Interquel: The book is specifically confirmed to be set between Bitter Work and The Library. That said, it doesn't directly follow up on or set up the events of either episode and reads more like an extra episode that doesn't impact the overarching plot.
  • Lovable Rogue: Jiang and the crew of the Flying Wolfbat are presented as this. Sure, they line their own pockets via crime, but they also treat Katara decently and help her as thanks for her services and give some much needed medicine to a struggling village and accept mere flowers as payment for it. A far cry from the pirates she stole the waterbending moves scroll from to be sure.
  • No Name Given: The Fire Nation soldier is never given a name, with even the Avatar Wiki only calling him "Overconfident Fire Nation soldier". This is likely because he's less a character in his own right and more a representation of the average Fire Nation soldier who wholly believes that the other Nations are evil and/or deserves to be conquered and can't be swayed no matter what Aang says or does.
  • Propaganda Machine: The captured Fire Nation soldier is shown to be what happens when the propaganda works perfectly on someone. For example, his reaction to seeing Appa is to say the existence of the Sky Bison is why the genocide of the Air Nomads was justified since the Air Nomads would've use them to Take Over the World. Since this is long before "The Headband", Aang has yet to see firsthand that young students in the Fire Nation are "taught" this nonsense in school and get berated and punished for questioning it.
Fire Nation Soldier: Hah! There! You admit it! You have an animal that flies If the Fire Nation hadn't stopped you, you'd have conquered every nation in the world from the backs of your winged beasts!
Aang: What? That's crazy. Who told you that?
