----

* AFriendInNeed: [[spoiler:Despite being easily overpowered by the Red Lotus during their first encounter, Asami, Bolin, and Mako resolve to do what they can to save Korra without hesitation.]]
* AdaptationExpansion: The pasts and relationships for the core members of Team Avatar and expanded upon.
* {{Badass}}: Every member of Team Avatar is this without question.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Almost every member of the team has this, including Naga.
* FriendlessBackground: Every member of the group has this to some extent, but Korra gets hit with this the most.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Every member of Team Avatar has this trait. [[spoiler: Korra and her friends are willing to use lethal force against the Red Lotus in the final battle. Korra in particular kills P'Li and Ghazan.]]
* TrueCompanions: Even though they meet each other under different circumstances, they still become good friends with each other. [[spoiler:Bolin, Asami, and Mako declare themselves the new Team Avatar shortly after Korra is kidnapped by the Red Lotus and resolve to rescue her.]]

----
!!Avatar Korra
A young teenage girl who was kidnapped by the Red Lotus when she was only three years old before the While Lotus could confirm her identity as the Avatar. She was kidnapped along with many other children from her tribe. After the Red Lotus discovered she was the Avatar, they took her and left the other children to be found by the search party.

----

* AbusiveParents: Korra's biological parents are caring people, but when the Red Lotus become her guardians she suffers a TrainingFromHell regiment from them for fourteen years, even from the ones that treated her relatively well.
* TheAce / BrokenAce: In terms of power and skill, Korra is even more of an ace than her canon counterpart. She even has some capability to Airbend without becoming Tenzin's student. However, being raised by the Red Lotus has greatly affected her psyche, and she has very little clue about things outside of training.
** During Chapter Eighteen, Korra is able to use water to perform healing for the first time and is successful [[spoiler:in saving Asami's life.]]
* ActionGirl: Just look about anywhere else on this page to see how.
* AdaptationExpansion: The past for this version of Korra is heavily explored through flashbacks while that was not the case for the canon version.
* AdaptationalBadass: While she was undoubtedly badass in canon, she is even more so in this story.
** She even has some capability to airbend thanks to Zaheer's teachings, but she keeps that to herself.
** Korra delivers [[CurbStompBattle Curb Stomp Battles]] to characters who were more difficult for her to defeat in canon, such as [[spoiler:Unalaq, Desna, Eska, and Kuvira.]]
** In Chapter Fifteen, demonstrates two instances of Korra achieving something before her canon counterpart. [[spoiler:Korra accidentally uses an airbening attack to stop Zaheer from killing Unalaq. At the end of the chapter, Korra enters the Avatar State for the first time in order to escape from the Republic City police.]]
** During Chapter Seventeen, Korra is capable of flying on a glider with some difficulty.
** In Chapter Eighteen, [[spoiler:Korra has received only superficial treatment for her previous injuries and is hit with a spit-dart of unknown content by Zaheer early in the battle against the Red Lotus, the dart leaves her sluggish and bordering on unconsciousness throughout the battle but she is able to hold off the effects and continues to fight. Not only is she victorious, she even kills P'Li and Ghazan as well as defeating Ming-Hua. It isn't until after the fight is over she succumbs to the dart's effects.]]
** In Chapter Nineteen, [[spoiler: Korra is able to fly on an air-bending glider without difficulty, a feat not displayed by her canon counterpart until Season Three.]]
* AdaptationalIntelligence: Despite being perhaps even more ignorant of the outside world than her canon counterpart, Zaheer's tutelage has provided Korra with a significant amount of knowledge in other areas. Korra also displays a level of cunning and awareness not seen from her canon counterpart. See GenreSavvy below.
** Also unlike in canon where it took her until Season Four to recognize this, Korra in Book One of Saga realizes that the goals of her enemies are not necessarily evil but actually justified to a degree, but their methods in achieving their goals are unacceptable.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: While she is just as much of a {{Determinator}} and BloodKnight as her canon counterpart, her upbringing by the Red Lotus has left an obvious impact on her psyche and personality. As a result, Korra in this story is more humble, cautious, and reserved than her canon counterpart.
* AmazonianBeauty: Several characters have commented on Korra's muscular build and attractive appearance. Both [[BiTheWay Asami]] and [[AmazonChaser Bolin]] have made comments about it.
* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:At the end of Chapter Eighteen, Korra finally succumbs to the effects of the needle she was hit with during her fight with the Red Lotus and falls unconscious. What effects the needle will have on Korra is currently unknown. In Chapter Nineteen it appears that the dart was actually a tranquilizer and Korra regains consciousness shortly after the end of Chapter Eighteen.]]
* {{Badass}}: Just like she is in canon, but taken UpToEleven.
* BadassBisexual: Confirmed by the writers of this story that Korra is bisexual like in canon.
* BadassBoast: Korra's given a few in the story.
-->'''Korra:''' I'm the strongest person in the city. No one can defeat me here.
-->'''Korra:''' I can kill you all; I am the Avatar,
* BadassInDistress: [[spoiler: After the Red Lotus stormed Asami's mansion during Chapter Thirteen and Fourteen, they placed Korra back under their control. Despite telling her friends not to go after her, they immediately sought help to save her.]]
* BadassPrincess: Korra does not even know of her real heritage, but she is this. Bolin even lampshades this [[spoiler:when he and Mako are saving Korra's parents.]]
* BerserkButton: Do not hurt Naga.
** When she was a child, she threatened Ming to not hurt Naga.
** During Chapter Four of Book One, she completely flips her lid when gang members try to burn Naga. She not only protects her beloved polar bear dog, but she teaches the gang members a lesson they should never forget.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Korra is more than capable of kicking anyone's ass. [[spoiler:She becomes enraged at the Red Lotus when she finds out they kidnapped her and lied to her for fourteen years.]]
* BiTheWay: Korra is bisexual just like her canon counterpart.
* BigGood: As the Avatar, Korra is supposed to be this, but she is not entirely sure how she is supposed to take up this role.
* BoobsOfSteel: Korra is easily the strongest in the group, and Asami notes that Korra's breasts are larger than hers after seeing Korra try on some of her clothing. This results in Asami taking Korra shopping to get more fitting clothes.
* BreakTheCutie: The Red Lotus did this to her when she was kidnapped at three years old by telling the little girl that her parents were dead, and she would never see them again. She cried herself to sleep later than night with only Ghazan to provide any comfort.
* BrokenTears: Has a few moments of this.
** In Chapter Fifteen, [[spoiler:after Korra refused to kill Unalaq and is nearly killed by the Red Lotus, Kuvira makes note that Korra is crying during their attempt to capture her.]]
** In Chapter Seventeen, [[spoiler:Korra breaks into this during her reunion with Asami and telling her about how the Red Lotus had been manipulating and deceiving her.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Spending time with her new friends made Korra a happier person and saw the world was not as bad as the Red Lotus made it seem to be.
* TheChosenOne: Being the Avatar involves being this.
* CombatMedic: During Chapter Eighteen, she uses waterbending for healing purposes for the first time in her life. [[spoiler:She manages to save Asami's life after her fight with Zaheer.]]
* CurbStompBattle: Dishes these out with remarkable regularity when not fighting against her Red Lotus teachers. [[spoiler: Notable victims have included characters who were able to give Korra trouble in canon such as Desna, Eska, Unalaq, and Kuvira.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Getting kidnapped and raised by the Red Lotus will do that to someone.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has her moments as seen in Chapter Four after meeting Bolin and Mako.
-->'''Mako''':Fine. Do it your way. But if you want an easier time here, don't use the alleys, don't wander the streets at night, and don't trust people until you know them
-->'''Korra''': (smirks) Okay. I'll start by not trusting you.
-->'''Mako''': I guess I walked into that one.
* TheDogBitesBack: [[spoiler:In Chapter Eighteen, Korra pays the Red Lotus back for all the years of abuse they've given her.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When she meets Asami for the first time as a little girl, she does not hesitate to save her life. Additionally, the affects the Red Lotus raising her are already taking root, such as believing her parents are dead and not knowing when her own birthday is.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: {{Subverted}}. [[spoiler:After the Red Lotus recapture her, she changes to a dark outfit. While she does nearly kill Unalaq and his family, she ultimately decides not to go through with it. Afterwards, the Red Lotus nearly kill her, and she is firmly against them.]]
* FishOutOfWater: She appears to be this even more so than her canon counterpart. She doesn't even know what a bra is among other things.
* ForWantOfANail: Korra is kidnapped by the Red Lotus in this story when she was a child rather than being under the protection of the White Lotus.
* FriendlessBackground: Besides Naga, Korra had no friends while growing up. Ghazan, and to a lesser extent P'li, were the closest humans Korra had to friends with the Red Lotus.
* GenreSavvy: Despite being ignorant to a number of things outside of her time with the Red Lotus, Korra proves to be quite capable in other areas.
** Korra displayed this even as a three year old child, upon her first meeting with the Red Lotus she denies being able to bend more than one element. Zaheer, however, is able to coax her into admitting that she can.
** She is able to remain under the radar from the Red Lotus for a while because she was careful. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Korra relaxes her guard too much later on which allows the Red Lotus to eventually find her.]]
** During her time in Republic City, she does her best to stick to firebending because she knows she could be identified as the Avatar if others witness her bending more than one element. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, she encountered a police officer who was able to identify her as someone who previously used waterbending to escape from two police officers earlier in the story. As a result, this results in the White Lotus and Red Lotus being alerted to her presence in Republic City even though she manages to avoid detection for a prolonged period of time.]]
** Despite being aware that the Red Lotus haven't been entirely truthful with her, she knows that the Avatar is bound to have enemies and keeps her identity as the Avatar secret. [[spoiler:It isn't until Chapter Fourteen that the secret is out.]]
** [[spoiler: In Chapter Seventeen, she quickly deduces the location that Zaheer is broadcasting from despite not having a proper trace of his signal.]]
*** [[spoiler: It's a matter of ChekhovsGun. Bolin gave Korra a good view of the city and pointed out the dormant volcano.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: Towards gang members. [[spoiler: And later, to her Red Lotus teachers.]]
* HealingHands: During her first attempt to utilize waterbending for healing, [[spoiler:Korra manages to save Asami's life.]]
* TheHero: She wants to be one, but she is not always sure what that means.
* HeroicBuild: She is noted to be extremely strong looking.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:She goes through one during Chapter Sixteen after the Red Lotus nearly kill her after she refuses to get out of P'Li's way to kill Unalaq along with believing her friends would never forgive her. She believes she has lost everything, and becomes even more frustrated that she cannot speak with Aang. She quickly gets out of this after she reunited with Naga and Tenzin tells her that her friends sought his help to save her.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She goes through this [[spoiler:after the Red Lotus attempts to kill her in Chapter Fifteen. She beats herself up for lying to her friends about her status as the Avatar and even considers herself a coward.]]
* HoldingHands: Korra and Asami tend to hold hands quite often throughout the story.
* HumbleHero: She starts off far more humble than her canon counterpart, and she is less proud of her status as the Avatar. While she has confidence in her abilities in fighting, she not so confident in her ability to be the Avatar. During the finale of Book One, Korra wonders if she can do half as good as Aang, but she will do the best she can.
* IWillFindYou: Korra's main objectives for running away from the Red Lotus is to find Asami and Aang. She soon finds out that Aang is already dead without knowing she is his reincarnation, but she is successful in meeting Asami again.
* [[IgnorantOfHisOwnIgnorance Ignorant Of Her Own Ignorance]]: The Red Lotus kept a lot of relevant information regarding the Avatar secret from her, including the fact that she is the reincarnation of Aang and the other Avatars preceding her.
* InSpiteOfANail: Korra still runs away from her guardians to head towards Republic City and has Naga. However, her objectives are different.
* IntertwinedFingers: That tends to happen a lot when Korra and Asami hold hands.
* ItsAllMyFault: Korra goes through this a few times, [[spoiler:especially after she starts to realize what type of people the Red Lotus are. She feels extremely guilty over the fact Yujin was murdered by them.]]
* ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne: She was kidnapped by the Red Lotus when she was three years old because she's the Avatar.
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler: In Chapter Fifteen, Korra is injured due to almost being killed by the Red Lotus, including being hit twice by a combustion bolt from P'Li and is still able to fight off the metal-bender police (who have Lin and Kuvira with them) despite not having learned how to metalbend.]]
* NiceGirl: Despite the way she was raised, Korra is still a good person.
* ProtagonistTitle / TitleCharacter: The story is called 'The Saga of Avatar Korra' for a reason.
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: She enjoys spending time with Asami.
* ShipTease: Has plenty of Asami and Bolin during Book One.
* StockholmSyndrome: While Korra was not aware that she was kidnapped or her parents were alive [[spoiler:until Chapter Sixteen]], she did feel imprisoned by the Red Lotus. Despite that, she feels a strong sense of loyalty to them even after she runs away.
** This is strongly illustrated during Chapter Fourteen where [[spoiler:even after Zaheer slaps her with enough force that causes her to bleed and have trouble with her vision, she apologizes to Zaheer about running away, and becomes happy that they think she is ready for her first assignment.]]
** In Chapter Sixteen, she admits that she not only loves her friends, but she loves all her teachers, including Ming-Hua, who treated Korra cruelly.
** During Chapter Seventeen, [[spoiler:Korra has made it clear she sees them for who they were, and she's heartbroken over the revelation that they kidnapped her and have been lying to her. She tearfully tells Asami that she thought she loved them and they loved her.]]
** By the events of Chapter Eighteen, [[spoiler:Korra rejects Zaheer's offer to rejoin them and fights the Red Lotus herself. She ends up killing Ghazan and P'li as well as fatally wounding Ming-Hua. She also manages to defeat Zaheer when the both of them are injured from their previous fights. The narration regarding her thoughts indicates she no longer feels any love for the Red Lotus.]]
* TearsOfJoy: Gets a few of these.
** During Chapter Seventeen, [[spoiler:after Asami helps her feel better after they reunite, she goes through this after being introduced to Tenzin's family who were her predecessor's grandchildren, and they happily welcome her.]]
** In Chapter Nineteen, [[spoiler: Korra sheds these when she is reunited with her parents after fourteen years apart.]]
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: While she likes to fight, she does not mind wearing a dress.
* TrainingFromHell: What the Red Lotus put her through. It results in her being even stronger than in canon.
* [[WellDoneSonGuy "Well Done Daughter!" Girl]]: Even though he was always distant and sometimes even physically and mentally abusive towards her, Zaheer is perhaps the closest thing to a father figure that Korra had growing up and out of all her Red Lotus mentors it is his approval that she seeks the most. Best seen during Chapter Fourteen.
* WorfHadTheFlu: {{Subverted}}. [[spoiler: When she confronts the Red Lotus in Chapter Eighteen, Korra is exhausted, badly injured with only minor medical treatment beforehand, and is hit by a tranquilizer needle by Zaheer early in the battle. Despite all of this, Korra is still able to fight and is still victorious.]]

----
!!Asami Sato

The only daughter and heiress to Hiroshi Sato. She originally met Korra when she was only five and Korra saved her life.

----

* ActionGirl: She is one without a doubt.
* AdaptationExpansion: More depth is given to Asami's capabilities and her past than in canon.
* AdaptationalIntelligence: While Asami was already pretty smart in canon, in this story her skills in science and business are much more pronounced. She is a skilled inventor (in this continuity she is the inventor of the shock glove and not just its user) and she also holds a leading position in her father's company by the time she and Korra reunite.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: [[spoiler:Delivers one to Mako after witnessing him torture a member of the Red Lotus.]]
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After Asami realizes Korra's the Avatar and believes a lot of the horrible things that happened to her were due to Asami's not telling anyone about witnessing a child her age controlling two elements, she wishes to do everything she can to make sure Korra is safe.]]
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: After observing the appearance and abilities of Korra's teachers, Asami quickly deduces Korra's true identity as the Avatar.
* BadassBisexual: Confirmed by the writers of this story that Asami is bisexual like in canon.
* BadassNormal: She is capable of utilizing chi-blocking.
* BiTheWay: Asami is bisexual just like her canon counterpart.
* CombatPragmatist: After being on the receiving end of a CurbStompBattle the first time she tried to fight Zaheer, Asami takes several precautions for the rematch. [[spoiler: She kicks off her rematch with Zaheer by hitting him with her motorcycle.]]
* CooldownHug: Gives one to Korra [[spoiler:during Chapter Seventeen after they reunited following her abduction by the Red Lotus.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: While she gets off easy compared to the others, her mother was brutally murdered which led her father to isolating her out of protection.
* DeclarationOfProtection: She gives one to Korra in Chapter Seventeen [[spoiler:after they are reunited following Korra being kidnapped by the Red Lotus.]]
--> '''Asami''': And don't worry. They won't take you ever again. I will not let them, I promise.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: During Book One, the amount of screentime and POV segments that center on her are second only to [[TheProtagonist Korra's]].
* FriendlessBackground: Due to her father being overprotective, Asami was home schooled and never made any real friends before meeting Korra, Bolin, and Mako.
* ForgottenFirstMeeting: Subverted because she remembers meeting Korra, but she does not clearly remember all the details as vividly as Korra does. This allows Korra to trick Asami into thinking that Korra did not use waterbending and only used firebending to keep Asami warm, so she would not suspect she is the Avatar. [[spoiler:It isn't until after the Red Lotus recapture Korra and Asami realizes that Korra's teachers represent a different element that she realizes she did see Korra use waterbending and is the Avatar.]]
* GenreSavvy: [[spoiler:When the Red Lotus are recapturing Korra, Asami reluctantly allows the Red Lotus to take Korra away after realizing she was the Avatar. She understood that if the Red Lotus knew Asami figured out Korra's identity, they would probably kill her for knowing too much. If that happened, there would be no one left to even try and save Korra later.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: [[spoiler:In terms of how she attempts to deal with Zaheer.]]
* GuiltComplex: Even though there were several factors that were outside her control, Asami still holds herself responsible for the circumstances of Korra's upbringing even though she acknowledges that the Red Lotus is the party that is truly at fault for what was done to Korra.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: After Chapter Fourteen, [[spoiler:she constantly blames herself for what happened to Korra despite all the good she has done.]]
* HoldingHands: She and Korra hold hands a number of times throughout the story.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: She tells her father that she wants real friends.
-->'''Asami:'''I want to make more friends - friends I make all on my own. Like Korra; and Bolin and Mako.
* IOweYouMyLife: While she has not explicitly said this, she has made it clear she is grateful that Korra saved her life when they were children [[spoiler:as well as when Korra saves her life again during Chapter Eighteen.]]
* IntertwinedFingers: That tends to happen a lot when Asami holds Korra's hand.
* ItsAllMyFault: Says this during Chapter Fourteen [[spoiler:after the Red Lotus kidnap Korra and Asami realizes that Korra is the Avatar. She realizes that if she told other people she saw Korra use two elements at once when they were children, she could have helped save Korra from her fate years ago.]]
** During Chapter Seventeen, [[spoiler:Asami states the Red Lotus are truly to blame, but she still feels that she is responsible for what happened to Korra. The narration of that chapter highlight her feelings on the subject.]]
-->'''Asami:''' I never wanted to be right. If I was right, then I never told anyone, and then... all this would be my fault. So, I guess it really is my fault in the end. I could have stopped it years ago.
-->'''Narration''': It was hard to shake the feeling of responsibility for so much of the trouble. She could have tried to tell someone back then. Not just let the adults dismiss her mystery girl as unimportant, but insist on what she had seen.
* LonelyRichKid: While Asami always appreciated the company of her family's servants and employees, she felt lonely due to never having any actual friends for most of her life.
* {{Muggle}}: Similar to canon, she is the only non-bender in the group, but she is still a BadassNormal who is capable of kicking ass.
* MuggleBestFriend: She becomes this to Korra during Book One.
* MustMakeAmends: [[spoiler:Asami appears to be taking this path in the aftermath of Chapter Fourteen.]]
* NiceGirl: She bails Mako out of jail despite the fact he stole from her after she hears his story. Afterwards, she offers to give Korra, Bolin, and Mako shelter after their home is destroyed.
* NiceToTheWaiter: She treats her servants and employees well.
* NonIdleRich: Similar to her canon counterpart, she does not let the fact she is rich stop her from doing things other people in her social class would not generally do.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:Asami is fatally wounded during her fight with Zaheer is about to die from her injuries. Korra manages to successfully save her life with using waterbending to heal her.]]
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:Despite the problems she has with Mako torturing someone, she is willing to help Mako for Bolin's sake since she still considers him a friend.]]
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: Asami loves spending time with Korra. Mako even lampshades Asami is Korra's best friend.
* SacredHospitality: She extends this to Korra, Bolin, and Mako after their home is destroyed.
* ShipTease: Has plenty of Korra and a little with Mako.
* TheSmartGuy: More so in this story.
* SpoiledSweet: Despite being rich, she treats others very well, especially her friends. She allows Korra to live with her and gets Mako and Bolin a new place to live.
* TragicKeepsake: She keeps a pendant that has a picture of her mother in it.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Asami is this to both Korra and the Red Lotus.
** When Asami first met the young Korra, she was sure she saw her perform both waterbending and firebending. While the adults dismissed her claim, if she has mentioned that she saw the girl use two different elements, it is possible that would have attracted the attention of the White Lotus, and Korra could have been rescued. [[spoiler:Asami lampshades this herself after realizing she was right all along.]]
** Asami is this to the Red Lotus because it was due to her meeting Korra as a little girl that caused Korra to always have doubts about the Red Lotus' views of the world and never fully embrace everything they taught her, which eventually led her to runaway. [[spoiler:Eventually, it is one of the reasons that led to Korra fully rebelling against the Red Lotus and directly or indirectly killing Zaheer's group at the end of Book One.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:Gives this to Mako after she sees him conduct torture on a Red Lotus member.]]
* WorthyOpponent: [[spoiler:Zaheer refers to her as one.]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Tells this to Korra during Chapter Seventeen [[spoiler:after they reunite following Korra's abduction by the Red Lotus.]]
-->'''Korra''': (while crying and hugging Asami) I always worried about you waiting in the snow for me and me never arriving and I wanted to say sorry for that. Again...and...and...now you know who I really am. I...I don't want to think what I would be like if I hadn't met you.
-->'''Asami''': You would always be the person you really are. And even if it was different, you would still be the same wonderful, caring, beautiful woman you are now. They could never change that about you. And no matter what I would still meet you. Somehow.

----
!!Bolin

An earthbender and younger brother to Mako. More open and idealistic, he is always willing to fight for his friends, family, and anyone else who needs help. He is imaginative and loves radio dramas.
----

* AdaptationalIntelligence: He still possesses his inherent goofiness and naiveté, but he is considerably more intelligent and perceptive.
** Unlike in canon, Bolin is instantly uncomfortable with Eska's advances and clearly does not wish to be in a relationship with her.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Part of the reason, he tries saving Korra during their first meeting. Ironically, she ends up saving him on at least one occasion instead.
* {{Adorkable}}: He definitely retains this trait from canon.
* AmazonChaser: He has a crush on Korra similar to canon.
* AscendedFanboy: Bolin is a fan of Aang's Team Avatar. He told Korra stories about them causing her to doubt what the Red Lotus had told her. [[spoiler:When Korra was taken by the Red Lotus, Bolin dubs Korra, Asami, Mako, and himself as the new Team Avatar.]]
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Similar to canon, he is the most childlike in the group, but he knows when to get serious when he needs to.
* BigBrotherWorship: He loves his brother and looks up to him. While he does not know everything his brother has done and gets angry when he does find out, it does not stop him from loving his brother.
* BookDumb: Justified Example. Due to losing his parents, he and his brother grew up on the streets rather than having a proper home or education.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His parents were killed. While he has not committed as many crimes as Mako, he has committed a few to stay alive.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He gives one to Korra at the end of Book One.
--> '''Bolin''': If anyone takes you away then the three of us will not stop until we got you back. We'd search all four corners of the world for you.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Mako asks Bolin what they would have done about Korra if Asami did not help them, and Bolin does not come up with the best answers.
* DisappearedDad: His father was killed when he was young.
* TheDulcineaEffect: In Chapter Four, Bolin helped Korra without hesitation when she was being harassed by a gang despite Mako's warning and him not knowing who she is.
* FriendToAllChildren: After Mako is hired to work at Future Industries and they move into a new home, Bolin takes up a job as a babysitter.
* GenreSavvy: Subverted since Bolin's fantasies tend to be improbable and whatever secrets he guessed correctly was out of sheer luck. He loves listening to radio dramas and he imagines his adventures as being in one.
** He was able to guess that Korra was the Avatar, a princess, and kidnapped by evil guardians because he thinks that's how stories go.
** Mako discussed this to him and told him fiction is getting into his head too much.
* HeroicBuild: He has this, especially after training to become a pro-bender.
* HiddenDepths: While he may not be the smartest person, he apparently has a gift for telling stories. It is most likely influenced by his love for radio shows.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: At the beginning of the story, he got easily convinced into taking a dangerous human trafficking job without guaranteed pay. If Korra had not been there to save him, he would have been arrested.
** {{Averted}} later when he meets Eska. In this instance, Bolin is smart enough to know that the Water Tribe princess is probably bad news, and it reflects that he [[CharacterDevelopment could have learned]] from his previous Horrible Judge of Character issue.
* JumpedAtTheCall: [[spoiler:After Korra is revealed to be the Avatar following the Red Lotus kidnapping her, he jumps at the chance at declaring himself, Mako, and Asami as part of the new Team Avatar.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Similar to canon, he appears to act as this to Mako.
* MissingMom: His mom was killed when he was a child.
* NeverLearnedToRead: Zigzagged. While he seems to have some literacy, he has a hard time reading the sign indicating the Sato mansion.
* NiceGuy: There does not appear to be a mean bone in his body.
* SacredHospitality: He extends this to Korra after he finds out she has nowhere to go, and she is new in Republic City.
* ShipTease: He has some with Korra during Book One.
* StreetUrchin: Since he was six years old up to the beginning of the story.
* TookALevelInBadass: It is noted that his earth bending improves after taking up training to be a pro-bender.
* {{Tritagonist}}: He is the third most important character during Book One.
* WideEyedIdealist: He's enamored with the heroic tales of Aang's Team Avatar and wishes to be like them.

----
!!Mako

A young firebender whose parents were murdered when he was a child. He does his best to look after his younger brother Bolin.

----
* AntiHero
* BigBrotherInstinct: He always looks out for his younger brother Bolin.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler:Inflicts it upon a Red Lotus member during Chapter 14 to find out what their plans are for Korra.]]

** He tortures a [[spoiler: member of the Red Lotus]], so they can help [[spoiler:Korra and learn what they plan on doing with her. In the process, he learns of their plans to kidnap her parents.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite the number of bad things he has done in the past, he is still a good person at heart.
* JustifiedCriminal: Prior to meeting Asami and Korra, he did what he could to keep his brother and himself alive.
* MissingMom: His mom was killed when he was a child.
* OutOfFocus: While he is still a major character in Book One, he lacks a POV, and he does not share as much screentime with Korra as Asami or Bolin, so his character and relationship with Korra remains underdeveloped outside of becoming friends with her.
* PromotedToLoveInterest: Inverted. Similar to canon, Mako and Korra begin their friendship off on a rough note, but neither have developed romantic feelings for each other during the course of Book One unlike in canon. Additionally, Korra spends more time with his brother, Bolin, rather than him.
* RealityEnsues: [[spoiler:While torturing a Red Lotus member to find out their plans did allow him to help save Korra's parents, it does get him into some trouble with the authorities in Chapter Nineteen, especially since they figure he's had experience doing it. * AdaptationExpansion: The characterization and screentime of Zaheer's group is greatly expanded upon in this story.
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:Despite imprisoning and training Korra for fourteen years, she eventually escapes from them and lives on her own for a while. Their actions and lies eventually cause her to turn against them.]]
* BrokenPedestal: They become this to Korra over the course of the story as she learns more about the lies and half truths they told her about. They officially become this after the events of [[spoiler:Chapters Fourteen and Fifteen when they kill Yujin, nearly kill her friends, and nearly kill her after she fails to kill Unalaq. By Chapter Seventeen, the Pedestal is completely broken, and she fights against them personally during Chapter Eighteen.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing: There are several instances of this throughout Book One.
** Zaheer’s plan spanning over a decade, enforced by a multi-national terrorist organization with some of the world’s greatest benders as members, who had evaded world leaders and even the previous Avatar in their quest to rid the world of leaders and governments was ultimately undone by several things the group didn't expect: A five-year old Asami who made friends with then four-year old Korra who told her of a much more pleasant side of the world than the Red Lotus had ever taught her which caused Korra to have doubts about their teachings and not fully embrace them.
** They did not expect Avatar Aang being able to contact her which led to Korra to runaway along with [[spoiler:deciding not to kill Unalaq and her eventual rebellion.]]
** The Red Lotus also underestimated Korra's companions: [[spoiler:Mako used torture to sabotage their plan to use her parents are hostages, and Korra believed Bolin's stories about the old Team Avatar.]]
** Ultimately, in the final battle, [[spoiler:they expected Tenzin to come and didn't expect Korra to confront them once and for all, and they did not expect Korra to be strong enough to defeat them all.]]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: They never considered the fact that keeping Korra isolated from the world rather than showing her it, especially the decaying state of the Earth Kingdom, might be counterproductive and cause problems if she ever decided to runaway and saw that not everything they said is accurate.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Zaheer and P’Li are confirmed as lovers like the canon. And while things between Ghazan and Ming Hua are left ambiguous, all four of them do seem to value each other’s lives much moreso than anyone else’s.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even though they kidnap all the children in Korra's village who were between three to four, they let all the other children go after they discovered Korra was the Avatar. They gave the children enough supplies to live until the search party was able to find them.
* ForWantOfANail: In this story, Korra is kidnapped by the Red Lotus prior to the White Lotus confirming her identity. As a result of the Red Lotus making their move first, Korra had fewer people to protect her, and the Red Lotus were successful.
* [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Hoist By Their Own Petard]]: [[spoiler: The overall fate of the Red Lotus, their teachings have made Korra an extremely skilled and powerful fighter. During the final fight, Korra uses her teacher's own techniques against them in order to defeat them.]]
* InSpiteOfANail: [[spoiler:Similar to canon, their own techniques are part of the reason for their undoing.]]
* KillEmAll: [[spoiler:By the end of Book One, Korra personally kills or causes the death of the main members of Zaheer's group.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Kidnapping Korra as a child and putting her through a TrainingFromHell regiment for fourteen years eventually leads to their defeats at Korra's hands.]]
* VillainBall: [[spoiler:When they trespass on the Sato Mansion, they are noticed by Yujin who they decide to kill before he can alert the authorities rather than restrain her. Due to killing her and not hiding her corpse well enough, this causes Korra to become further disillusioned.]]
* VillainHasAPoint: While Korra becomes somewhat disillusioned by their teachings over the course of the story, she does know they also had a number of good points too.
* WouldHurtAChild: The Red Lotus kidnapped many children in order to find the Avatar. After they discovered Korra was the Avatar, they put her through a TrainingFromHell regiment.

----
!!Zaheer

The leader of this particular cell of the Red Lotus.

----

* AffablyEvil: As in canon, though he switches between this and FauxAffablyEvil sometimes.
* ArchEnemy: Even though every member of the Red Lotus has become a BrokenPedestal to Korra, after he pressures P'Li to shoot through Korra to finish off Unalaq and she learns of her childhood abduction, Zaheer becomes her most bitter and personal foe.
* BadassNormal: Despite not having any powers, he is strong enough to hold his own against almost anyone.
* BigBad: Of Book One.
* BlatantLies: His usual dialogue with Korra is a mixture of lies and half-truths.
** When the Red Lotus was taking Korra from her home and tells her that her parents are dead, he assures the three year old girl that the Red Lotus will collectively act as a ParentalSubstitute, he instead subjects Korra to fourteen years of TrainingFromHell.
** He keeps telling her how cruel the world is. While there is some truth to what he says, he made the mistake of overly generalizing it which caused Korra to doubt him.
* BrokenPedestal: Along with the rest of the Red Lotus, he becomes this to Korra over the course of the story. He also briefly becomes this to P'Li after the failed assassination attempt on Unalaq in which he told her to shoot at Korra.
* CruelMercy: [[spoiler: From Korra, who spares his life after she defeats him and blocks his chi. She sees him as being a shell of a man and decides not to imprison him despite what he did to her. However, he knows that all of his friends from the Red Lotus are dead like in canon and they all died for nothing.]]
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Unlike the other members of the Red Lotus, he is a Type I because he is still alive in canon. By transferring his spirit to the Spirit World his body will die eventually.]]
* DisproportionateRetribution: In a flashback, when Korra angrily attacked him, he paralyzed her with chi-blocking and was going to leave her alone in the snow before being convinced not to by Ghazan and P'Li.
* EvilMentor: To Korra
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:Tenzin mentions one of the Red Lotus leaders released his spirit into the Spirit World to avoid truly being captured. Zaheer does the same thing at the end of Book One.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: He tends to be this.
** He speaks about the importance of freedom and life, but he took Korra's freedom when she was a child and [[spoiler:he was fine with killing Yujin who was an innocent bystander.]]
** Once criticized Korra for not being a CombatPragmatist, but later calls her a coward for not being willing to fight him fairly. [[spoiler: She does, and still defeats him.]]
* KickTheDog: This can be the description of his relationship with Korra.
** Abducted a three year old Korra and told her that [[BlatantLies her parents were dead and that she would never see them again]].
** Used chi-blocking to paralyze Korra and was going to leaver her alone in the snow had he not been stopped by Ghazan and P'Li.
* TheLeader: Of his particular group.
* ManipulativeBastard: He does not have any interactions with Korra in which he is not manipulating or at least trying to manipulate her in some way.
* ShootTheDog: Tells P'Li to finish off Unalaq even if Korra is in the way, which she is.
* VillainHasAPoint: Korra notes that he is right about some of the problems plaguing the world, such as inequality and corruption, even though he has lied about a few other things.
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler: Suffers one after discovering P'Li is dead after fighting Korra in Chapter Eighteen. Revealed later that his catatonic state was the result of him permanently transferring his Spirit to the Spirit World.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: He slaps Korra across the face during Chapter Fourteen with enough force to cause her to bleed and have trouble with her vision. He also has [[spoiler:Yujin killed and would have killed Asami had it not been for Korra.]]

* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:He is the nicest to Korra out of the group, and he suffers a horrific death at her hands even if it was partly by accident.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:See CruelAndUnusualDeath.]]
* PetTheDog: Just about sums up his relationship with Korra.
** When Korra is taken from her home at the age of three, he stays with her until she cries herself to sleep.
** He convinces Zaheer not to leave Korra out alone in the cold after she loses a sparing match with him.
** He allows Korra to keep Naga after she finds her, and he seems to take pity on the fact Naga lost her mother.
** He did not kill Naga during Chapter Fourteen and simply restrained her.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Is the most moral member of the Red Lotus and by far the nicest to Korra.

Korra believes her to be dead in Chapter Nineteen but it is revealed that while Korra did not kill her, the injuries she gave to Ming-Hua are severe and she is not expected to survive.]]
* ArtificialLimbs: As in canon, she uses waterbending to create some.
* AxCrazy
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Assuming she dies from the wounds Korra gave her, she will be a Type II. In canon, she does not die until after Harmonic Convergence during Book Three. In this story, she dies at the end of the first story arc about a year before Harmonic Convergence.]]
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Besides Zaheer, she treated Korra the worse. She is terribly wounded by Korra during their fight and will eventually succumb to the said injuries.]]
* KickTheDog: Her relationship with Korra is the opposite of Korra's relationship with Ghazan.
** During one of Korra's water-bending lessons, Ming's frustration with Korra's style leads her to butcher an Otter Penguin in front of Korra.
* LackOfEmpathy: She either doesn't understand or doesn't care about the emotional impact that slaughtering an animal in front of a child can have on the child.

* SadisticTeacher

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Like in canon, she was kidnapped by a warlord to become a human weapon and after Zaheer rescued her she discovers that the warlord murdered her family.
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Type II. In canon, she does not die until after Harmonic Convergence during Book Three. In this story, she dies at the end of the first story arc about a year before Harmonic Convergence.]]
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:She along with Ghazan treated Korra the best out the Red Lotus, and she ended up dying after fighting Korra during Chapter Eighteen.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:At Korra's hands]]
* NotSoDifferent: Her time as a human weapon is similar to Korra's upbringing by the Red Lotus, even if P'Li refuses to admit it.
* PetTheDog: Though not quite as much as Ghazan, she treats Korra well. [[spoiler: But she is still willing, albeit reluctant, to sacrifice Korra for the Red Lotus' goals.]]
** Explained to Korra how to find a source to fuel her fire-bending by telling her of her own DarkAndTroubledPast.
** It was P'Li who explained puberty to Korra and helped her adjust to the changes.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: During the Red Lotus attack in Chapter Fifteen, P'Li puts all of her power behind a combustion bolt that obliterates Councilor Chiyo and some of the building, even [[AxCrazy Ming-Hua]] thought this to be excessive. [[spoiler: Later, she is ordered by Zaheer to shoot through Korra in order to finish off Unalaq, P'Li later remarks that she put all of her power behind the two combustion bolts that she fired at Korra but luckily Korra was able to block them.]]
* VillainousBSOD: [[spoiler: After attacking Korra on Zaheer's orders.]]

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She is willing to help the Earth Kingdom refugees.
* SheIsTheKing: The title Fire Lord is unisex similar to canon.

----
!!Azula

Zuko's younger sister.

----

* [[BadassGrandpa Badass Grandma]]: Old age has not made her any less dangerous. It's even lampshaded by Ming Hua.
** For reference, when the Red Lotus tried to assassinate the Royal Family, Azula was holding off the Red Lotus with only the then-child (General) Iroh helping her.
* BerserkButton: Sneaking into the Fire Nation Royal Palace and trying to kill her family members is a fast way to get on her bad side.
* TheGhost: Has only appeared so far in a flashback in Book 1.
* HeelFaceTurn: Judging from her actions, she appears to have made peace with her family and the Gaang.
* OhCrap: The Red Lotus practically wet themselves when she enters the fray.
* UnstoppableRage: Emphasis on unstoppable.
--> "she was a nightmare given form, terrifying and monstrous. She was fury incarnate, moving faster than she should be capable of; lightning and flames burst from her hands as she roared fire."

!!Avatar Aang

The previous Avatar

----

* BigGood: He was this during his time. [[spoiler:He still manages to fulfill this role to an extent during Korra's time by acting as Korra's conscience to prevent her from going through killing Unalaq.]]
* BrokenPedestal: He was Zaheer's mentor during Zaheer's time as an Air Acolyte. They eventually had a falling out that led Zaheer to develop a low opinion of Aang, considering him to be failure as an Avatar and as an Air-bender.
* PosthumousCharacter: If he was not dead, Korra would not be the current Avatar.
* SpiritAdvisor: He has not made a full connection to Korra yet, but he has been able to partly reach out to her.

----
!!Katara

The wife of Avatar Aang and mother of Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin.

----

* [[BadassGrandpa Badass Grandma]]: Is an actual grandmother and like Azula, old age hasn't made Katara miss any steps in a fight.
* TheGhost: She is mentioned a few times during Book One outside of a picture. However, she might appear in Book Two.
* UnstoppableRage
--> Lin: She was - is - a force to be reckoned with when she's angry.

----
!!Sokka

The brother of Katara and brother-in-law Avatar Aang.

----

* BadassNormal: He was this.
* TheGhost: Unlike his canon counterpart, he has yet to appear in any flashbacks.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died prior to the start of the story.

----
!!Toph

Avatar Aang's former Earth Bending teacher and mother to Lin and Suyin.

----

* {{Badass}}: Just like in canon.
* TheGhost: She has been mentioned several times and is apparently alive, but she has yet to make an appearance.
* ReallyGetsAround: The authors confirmed that Lin and Suyin have different fathers like in canon.

----
!!Zuko

Former Fire Lord and father to current Fire Lord Izumi. He was a friend to Avatar Aang, and his fire bending teacher.

----

* TheGhost: He was mentioned a few times in Book One, but he did not make any appearances. It has been hinted he might appear in Book Two.

----
* AntiHero
* BigBrotherInstinct: He always looks out for his younger brother Bolin.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler:Inflicts it upon a Red Lotus member during Chapter 14 to find out what their plans are for Korra.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Witnessed his parents get killed, and he has committed various crimes to keep him and his brother alive.
* DefeatMeansRespect: [[spoiler: Despite getting beaten badly by her in an underground bending arena, Mako does not hold any grudge towards Kuvira.]]
* DistressedDude: [[spoiler: He has to be rescued by Asami, Korra and Bolin when he was being beaten up.]]
* DisappearedDad: His father was killed when he was young.
* GoodIsNotSoft: [[spoiler:He is willing to conduct torture to gain information.]]
* HonorAmongThieves: Planned to return Asami's precious pendant upon seeing it has a picture of her mother
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: He uses this as his reasoning for a few of his actions.
** He tells Asami he committed a number of crimes to help keep himself and Bolin alive.
Additionally, Asami now feels uncomfortable around him as a result.]]
* ScarsAreForever: He has a few on his body.
* StreetUrchin: Since he was eight years old up to the beginning of the story.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Witnessed her mother get killed.
* EvilDetectingDog: She was quick to pick up on the less than innocent intentions the gang members had towards Korra.

----

* BigBad: Of Book One.
* EvilMentor: To Korra

----
!!Ghazan

A talented earthbender who has mastered the rare ability of lavabending.

----

* AffablyEvil: He is the nicest of the Red Lotus by far.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler:The final battle against Korra does not end well for him.]]
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Type II. In canon, he does not die until after Harmonic Convergence during Book Three. In this story, he dies at the end of the first story arc about a year before Harmonic Convergence.]]
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:He is the nicest to Korra out of the group, and he suffers a horrific death at her hands even if it was partly by accident.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:See CruelAndUnusualDeath.]]

----

An armless waterbender who can use water as appendages to great, and startling, effect.

----

* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:Her fate at the end of Chapter Eighteen is left up in the air. Korra claims to have found her unconscious, but she believed P'Li was unconscious before realizing P'Li was dead. Korra believes her to be dead in Chapter Nineteen but it is revealed that while Korra did not kill her, the injuries she gave to Ming-Hua are severe and she is not expected to survive.]]
* ArtificialLimbs: As in canon, she uses waterbending to create some.
* AxCrazy
* ThePerfectionist: Is this to some degree, according to P'li.
* SadisticTeacher

----

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Her recommendation to keep the pro-bending arenas under Red Lotus surveillance in case Korra visited them[[spoiler: is what eventually allowed them to track Korra down.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:At Korra's hands]]

* AdaptationalVillainy: While she was a villain in the original series, her actions have apparently been ''even worse'' than they were in canon based on how many civilians have sought shelter in Republic City and the Water Tribes.
* BiggerBad: The Earth Queen's actions prior to and throughout Book One have had numerous consequences that have caused trouble for the protagonists and other characters. It is likely they will continue to be a problem for the foreseeable future.
** The number of refugees from the Earth Kingdom have not only stretched the other nations thin, but [[spoiler:it made it easier for the Red Lotus to manipulate Korra, which almost led her to kill Unalaq and his family.]]
** The world leaders have had to put more focus on handling the consequences of her actions rather than being able to lend manpower to help the White Lotus search for Korra.
* TheGhost: While she has been mentioned and the results of her reign have become known, she did not make an appearance in Book One, and did not ever send a representative to the World Leader conference. However, it is possible she might appear in the future.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: She is far from an ideal ruler.
* {{Jerkass}}: Given her actions, it is fairly easy to assume she is one.
* NoNameGiven: She is always referred to by title, never by name.

----
!!Suyin Beifong

Lin's younger half sister.

----

* HeroicBastard: Similar to canon, Lin is Toph's illegitimate daughter.
* TheLeader: She is the matriarch of Zaofu.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She wishes to help the Earth Kingdom.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fire Nation]]

----
!!Fire Lord Izumi

Daughter of former Fire Lord Zuko and current ruler of the Fire nation

----

* AscendedExtra: In canon, she only makes one non-speaking cameo and one speaking appearance. While she has only appeared in one chapter so far, it appears she will probably make more appearances in the future.
* TheLeader: She is the current Fire Lord.

* UnstoppableRage: Emphasis on unstoppable.
--> "she was a nightmare given form, terrifying and monstrous. She was fury incarnate, moving faster than she should be capable of; lightning and flames burst from her hands as she roared fire."

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Previous Team Avatar]]

----
!!Avatar Aang

* UnstoppableRage
--> Lin: She was - is - a force to be reckoned with when she's angry.

----
!!Sokka

The brother of Katara and brother-in-law Avatar Aang.

----

* BadassNormal: He was this.

Girl]]: Even though he was always distant and sometimes even physically and mentally abusive towards her, Zaheer is perhaps the closest thing to a father figure that Korra had growing up and out of all her Red Lotus mentors it is his approval that she seeks the most. Best seen during Chapter Fourteen.

* GuiltComplex: Even though there were several factors that were outside her control, Asami still holds herself responsible for the circumstances of Korra's upbringing even though she acknowledges that the Red Lotus is the party that is truly at fault for what was done to Korra.
