Formerly Damaya and then Syenite, an orogene whose son is murdered just before the start of the Fifth Season.
- Outliving One's Offspring: The story begins with Essun finding her youngest child, Uche, murdered by his father. She also killed her first child to keep the Fulcrum from taking him.
Alabaster
A ten-ringer orogene, whom Syenite is assigned to copulate with.
- Ironic Name: Lampshaded by Syenite. His chosen name refers to a pale stone, whereas Alabaster himself is very dark-skinned.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He triggers the current Fifth Season, one worse than any before it.
