that trope is for when villains have a good point or reason for what they are doing - accurately stating that you have been formulating an evil plan to restore a genocidal regime for 30 years does not qualify

Likewise Foil. Characters have to be compared within the story to be foils of one another.

* {{Foil}}: To Ciena Ree. Both Ciena and Iden are [[WideEyedIdealist Wide-Eyed Idealists]], strongly committed to the virtuous ideals upheld by their homeworlds ([[IGaveMyWord loyalty]] and [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans order]], respectively). Both women are confronted at certain points by the Empire's true nature. But while Ciena feels bound by her oaths to the Empire to the point where (though she won't desert outright) she wishes that [[DeathSeeker something]] would end her service to the same, Iden [[spoiler:defects to the New Republic very soon after she witnesses the Empire go off the deep end by carrying out Operation Cinder on her fiercely loyal homeworld of Vardos.]]

* {{Foil}}:
** To Admiral Versio. Having been raised in military families, they both dedicated their lives to the Empire to the point that they are specialized in their own fields--Hask being a special forces operative, while the Admiral is a high-ranking StateSec officer. [[spoiler:They both lose or lost their families at some point--Hask's DarkAndTroubledPast is that they were killed by rebels, while the Admiral is bitterly divorced and loses his daughter's allegiance. After reuniting with a defected member of Inferno Squad, the Admiral acknowledges as the Empire is dying that he wasted his life and urges his daughter to have a happy life, while Hask--having joined the transition to the First Order--is still bitter and blames his former brother-in-arms for leaving him for a happy life.]]
** To Agent Kallus. Both are Imperial agents specialized in neutralizing rebels and originate from the Core Worlds, with both being fiercely dedicated to their jobs because they hold [[ItsPersonal grudges]] against rebels because of their {{Dark and Troubled Past}}s involving the brutal deaths of their family and/or friends. However, when faced with a MoralEventHorizon[=/=]ArmorPiercingQuestion on how far their loyalty goes, [[spoiler:Kallus defects after realizing none of his colleagues actually want to help people while Hask deludes himself into believing the Empire is still good in spite of hurting people]].

Having similarities is not the same as being an Evil Counterpart.

* EvilCounterpart: Iden could be considered this to Leia Organa [[spoiler: prior to Iden's HeelFaceTurn]]. Both are strong-willed women who sought to be like their fathers and live up to their expectations. Both are very passionate about their chosen causes, and filled with contempt for everything the other side stands for, with Iden being wholly committed to destroying the Rebellion in service to the Empire and Leia is just as wholly committed to helping the Rebellion bring down the Empire; this stems with Iden growing up on a mostly peaceful planet that prospered under the Empire's rule, while Leia grew up on a peaceful planet that was destroyed by the Empire, which prior to that had prospered. Also, Iden was raised to be a soldier, Leia a senator and diplomat, but ultimately both women came out very combat-capable and both are excellent shots with a blaster. Finally, Iden dresses in predominantly black while Leia dresses in predominantly white do distinguish the sides that they are fighting for.
